SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS JOSEPH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have inlvented a new and useful Device for Lowering and Raising Steamboat-Chimneys, of which the following is a specification. k
My invention relates to an improved lowering and raising mechanism and brace for jointed steamboat-chimneys.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a steamboat-chimney provided with my improvement, the folding section being shown in its erect position by strong lines and in its depressed position by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a stern elevation, on a smaller scale, Of a pair of such chimneys in the erect condition.
K may represent a portion of the top or hurricane deck of a steamboat.
B represents the upper end of the stationary portion of a steamboat-chimney.
A representsl the top or folding section, hinged to the portion B at L.
The above portions maybe of any customary or desired construction. p
Hinged to the deck at M, some distance astern of the chimney, is a bar, D, and hinged at N to the folding chimney-section is a similar bar, C. The upper extremity of the barD and the lower extremity of the bar C are held in close juxtaposition by mea-ns of yokes O P, having anti-friction rollers E F. Said bars at their said contiguous extremities carry housings Q R for sheaves G H of any suitable blocks or pulleys, preferably of some self breaking or locking type.
I represents a stern-guy, and J a thwart-guy from top of the stationary chimney B to hurricane-deck. Said guys are preferably formed of wire cable. The guy J, being attached to the deck, as at j, in alignment with the hinge M, remains taut in every position of the mechanism. The guy I, on the contrary, becomes slack (see dotted lines I) on lowering of the folding section.

S represents the hoisting-chain of the pulley-blocks.
All of the above-described members are duplicated for the other chimney.
T represents a rigid brace or strut, which couples the upper extremities of the two lower chimney-sections B.
The depressed positions of the above parts are shown by dotted lines at A C D', &c., in Fig. l. y The arrangement and disposition ofthe guys I and J are manifestly such as, while combining with the rigid members C, D, and T, to firmly hold and brace the pipes in their erect position, to nevertheless permit the lowering o f the hinged sections in the manner indicated.
I am aware that it has long been customary to sustain steamboat and other smoke-pipesin their erect position by braces, both rigid and flexible, and that steamboat-chimneys having hinged and foldableupper sections are well known; and, further, that extensible sliding bars such as employed by me have been employed by builders and others. 1 therefore disclaim novelty in such devices, broadly Or separately considered.
I claim as new and of my invention- Inthe described combination with a pair of hinged steamboat-pipe sections, the sliding `and vibrating bars C D, hinged respectively to the folding sections and to the deck, and yoked together `at O P, each bar havinga sheave or pulley operated by chain S, accessible to the deck, in the described association with the guys .I J and the strut T, arranged and Operating as set forth.
