Description
March 7, 1950 B. E. WALBERG DRUM MUFFLER Filed Feb. 20, 1946 Patented Mar. 7, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRUM MUFFLER Bernard E. Walberg, Worcester, Mass.
Application February 20, 1946, Serial No. 649,079
2 Claims. (01. 84411) This invention relates to new and improved drum muflling devices for the purpose of controlling vibration and tone of drums and the like.
Objects of the invention include the provision of a device disposable between the drum heads interiorly of the drum and secured to the shell for adjustment of mufflers contacting both drum heads for simultaneous and equal control of vibration and tone of both drum heads.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the novel drum mufller showing the same attached to a drum, parts being in section; and
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device of Fig. 1, parts being broken away.
In the drawing there is shown a drum having a shell I and a pair of drum heads l2 attached thereto in the usual manner. A spring bar I4 is secured transversely of the shell by means of fasteners 56 having heads l8 finding bearing points on a plate 20 at the exterior of the shell Ill. The bar i4 is considerably longer than the height of the shell or the width of the drum and is provided with arms 22 and 24 bent downwardly as shown in Fig. 1, to coincide in general with the drum heads.
The arms 22 and 24 are pivotally secured to links 20 at 28 by means of brackets 30, and are also secured to cross rods 32 by any desired means such as rivets. The rods 32 are disposed transversely of the arms 22 and 24 and parallel to the drum heads. Muffling pads of felt or other muilling material are shown at 34 and are secured to the ends of rods 32 at the outside aspects thereof to contact the drum heads and muffle the same.
As finger grip 44 is turned in one direction. block 38 will travel downwardly to swing arms 22 and 24 and therefore the mufflers 34 inwardly toward each other thus lessening the muiliing effeet; on the other hand finger grin 44 may turned o positely to raise block 38. thrusting arms 22 and 24 and. therefore, mufflers 34 outwardly away from each other thus increasing the tension 2 on the drum heads. It will be seen that this invention provides a simple, easily operated and adjustable drum muffler for muffling both drum heads simultaneously, and the entire device is concealed within the drum except for the adjusting finger grip 44.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A drum muffler comprising a spring bar, end portions thereof forming swingable arms, means to secure the spring bar to a drum shell, 2. block, links connected to said end portions and to the block, means to move the block toward and from the spring bar to adjust the end portions toward and from each other, drum head pads, and means securing the latter to the end portions for selectively greater or lesser muiiling contact with the drum heads.
2. The combination of a drum having a shell and a pair of spaced drum heads with a drum muffler therefor, the latter comprising a pair of movable arms, means to mount the arms within the drum, means to move the arms selectively or from each other to move the same from or toward the drum heads respectively, a drum head muffiing pad for each arm, means securing a pad to each arm, means exterior of the drum for operating the arm moving means, the latter comprising a pair of links, means pivoting each link to an arm, means to pivot the arms, the last named means being operative by the means exterior of the drum.
BERNARD E. WALBERG.
