1 k This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in sm'oking pipes, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which embodies in its construction means for facilitating thorough and complete combustion of tobacco, so that the operating efiiciency of the pipe is considerably enhanced and the accumulation of tar or scale in the pipe bowl is substantially minimized.

A further object of the invention is to provide a smoking pipe which is simple in construction and which, by virtue of the characteristics above outlined, will enable the smoker toobtain greater satisfaction, since the effort required to draw air through the pipe will be greatly reduced.

Another object of the invention is to provide a smoking pipe which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture, which will not easily become damaged, which may be conveniently kept clean, and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.

With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the invention;

Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken sub- 'stantially in the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure l, and

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a draft increasing element used in the invention.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and designated generally by the reference character In, the same embodying in its construction the usual bowl portion H and a stem portion l2, as will be clearly apparent.

The essence of the invention resides in the This insertis placed, major end directed upwardly, in the lower portion of the bowl H, and a foraminous cover plate or baflie I4 is disposed within the bowl immediately above the element or insert l3, as shown in Figure 1.

The insertion of the baffle or plate [4 into the bowl II is facilitated by providing the bowl in the sides thereof with a transverse slot l5 which, in plan view, assumes a substantially semi-circular configuration. It is to be noted that the plate [4 is substantially circular, but one half thereof is of a somewhat greater diameter with respect to the remaining 'half, the larger portion of the bafile plate being effectively accommodated within the slot l5, as shown.

When the invention is placed in use, tobacco I may be packed in the bowl ll above the baffle plate 14, whereas an empty chamber will exist below the baffle plate, that is, within the frustoconical insert or element I3. By virtue of the provision of this empty space in the lower portion of the bowl, the passage of air through the pipe will be greatly facilitated and complete combustion of the tobacco will result.

Moreover, in addition to its primary purpose of providing an empty chamber in the lower portion of the pipe bowl, the insert or element l3 will effectively function as a filtering element for preventing tobacco and other impurities from reaching the mouth of the smoker.

When the element I3 becomes clogged or otherwise obstructed, it may be easily and conveniently replaced by simply withdrawing the baffle plate M from the pipe bowl, the latter operation being facilitated by the provision of a finger catch or detent [6 on the bafiie plate. As will be noted, thisfinger catch or detent is of an unobtrusive nature, being normally disposed within a recess or depression I! provided in the side wall of the pipe bowl.

After the baffle plate I4 has been removed from thebowl, the element l3 may be ejected by simply turning the smoking pipe upside down, so to speak, and gently tappin the-lower end portion of the bowl.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, a further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this rangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a smoking pipe, a bowl provided in its lateral Wall with a horizontal slot, the outer surface of said wall being provided at one longitudinal edge of saidtslot with a recess, a foraminous bafiie plate slidably positioned in said slot transversely of the 10 bowl, and a finger piece at one edge of said plate,

said finger piece being disposed entirely in said recess without projecting beyond the outer surface of said wall.
