This invention relates to an attachment for cans, and more particularly to such an attachment adapted to be used with 4paint cans or the like.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an attachment to be used in paint cans, so arranged as to preclude the filling or clogging of the top groove of such cans with paint.
An additional important object of the invention is the provision of such a device which will facilitate stirring and pouring the contents into or out of cans provided with groove-tight lids.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device forming a spout attachment which is capable of being housed and slidably movable Within a paint can or the like, which spout may be extended through the opening of the can to provide a delivery opening for the contents of the can, and may be selectively telescoped within the can when not in use.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having particular reference now to the drawings, there is disclosed at I a paint can provided with a bottom I I, and a top peripheral groove I2, adapted to be engaged by a, suitable flanged lid (not shown). The device of the instant invention comprises an insertable attachment or sliding member I3 preferably of roughly frustoconical form, having a diameter at its base I4 slightly less thankthe interior surface diameter of the can I0 and adapted frictionally to engage the interior of the can to provide means whereby the same may remain in any position to which it is adjusted. The apex of the device I5 is of a diameter less than the aperture or opening at the top of the can within the radius of the groove l2.
Suitable vents I6 may be positioned lperipherally about the device I3, to permitvthe drainage of paint or the like back into the body of the receptacle. Two of these vents, oppositely aligned, are adapted for the reception of the ears or hooks Il of the handle member or bail I8 adapted to be utilized in raising the device into a higher position in the paint can.
In the operation of the device it will be understood that preferably the same is pos-itioned in the can during the manufacture thereof, at a point adjacent the top and frictionally held in position therein. When the can is opened and it is desired to pour the contents from the same through the spout-like or narrowed opening at the top of member I3, the device may be raised by means oi the bail I8 to the position shown in Figure 1, by inserting the bail through the spout opening whereupon the contents may be poured out of the same without the possibility of iilling or clogging the groove I2, thus assuring a tight t to the lid of the device when the same is repositioned thereon. Correspondingly, when the device is in elevated position the volume of the can is increased and thus prevents the overowing of the same while the contents are being stirred or the like. In order to prevent the formation of skim on the surface of a partly used can, a sheet of paper or the like may be placed over the surface of the paint by the user and allowed to rest on apex I5 of device I3.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as trative and not in a. limiting sense.
I claim: y
1. In combination, a can having a cylindrical side wall and a top with an annular portion depending below the upper edge of said side wall and an opening in said top, an attachment comprising a tubular member in said can havingv a frustoconical pouring spout at its upper end slidable through said opening and a flaring base on said spout having vents therethrough, said base having a depending annular sleeve frictionally and slidably engaging with the side wall of the can.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the outer surface of said flaring base is engageable with the rim of said opening when the tubular body is in its raised position.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said vents extend about said flaring base in a horizontal plane, the outer surface of said flaring base being engageable with the rim of said opening when the tubular body is in its raised position.
