1 Claim.

This invention relates to garter clasps.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved garter clasp which is so designed that it will not injure the threads of a stocking and at the same time will rmly hold the stocking.

Another object of this invention is to provide a clasp of this kind which has no movable parts and is so constructed that the stocking can be readily gripped or released.

A further object of this invention is to provide a garter clasp which is of simple construem tion so that it can be easily and quickly made.

With the foregoing objects and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists ofthe novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specically referredto and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing and first to Figures 1, 2 and 3 the numeral Ill designates generally a substantially U-shaped support which may be formed out of relatively rigid wire. The support I has an arcuate upper end or bight Il and secured to and extending substantially from the bight Il is a loop I2. The loop I2 comprises a horizontal bar I3 which is adapted to engage a supporting strap and the opposite ends of the bar I3 are bent inwardly and downwardly in convergent relation to form supporting bars I 4, which may be welded or otherwise firmly secured to the 4bight II. The opposite legs of the U-shaped member I 0 are bent inwardly as indicated at I and the lower ends I6 thereof are in parallel relation. Referring now to Figures 4 and 5, there is disclosed a slightly modied form of this invention. A substantially U-shaped member Il)ab is .provided which is formed of a bent wire and the bight IlEL is of substantially semi-circular configuration. The opposite legs of the U-shaped member IIIa are bent inwardly as indicated at I 5a and terminate at their lower ends in parallel lower portions I 6a. A suspending loop I2a formed of a horizontal straight bar I 3a and downwardly `convergent arms Ida is secured by welding or the like to the bight IIa and extends upwardly therefrom. A lug I'Iab is disposed between the parallel arms Ia, the latter being bent inwardly, as indicated at ISE, so as to thereby form a narrow space I8a between the opposite edges of the lug I'Ia and the straight arms I 6a. The lower portion of the lug I'la is formed with a pair of cutouts or notches 23 and a rubber cap 24 is mounted about the lug I 'Ia and is provided at its lower open end with inwardly extending locking members 25. The rubber cap 24 may, therefore, be of the removable type so that when the cap becomes worn or unserviceable vit can be replaced by a new cap. y

Referring now to Figure 6; there is disclosed another modification of this invention embodying a substantially U-shaped support Il)b which has extending from the upper or bight end thereof a looped strap receiving member I 2b. The support I 0b is formed with outwardly curved opposite arms I5b which merge at their lower ends into parallel arms |61. The lug I'lb has the opposite lengthwise edges thereof spaced from the inner sides of the arms llib so as to thereby form spaces I8b within which the stocking is adapted to engage. The lug Hb, at a point adjacent the lower end thereof, is formed with a pair of oppositely extending notches 26 which provide locking or gripping means in addition to the gripping action of the lug 11b. It willbe understood that if desired a rubber cap may be applied over lug Hb with the lower end thereof engaged in the notches 2Gb similar to the construction shown in Figure 4.

Referring now to Figure '1, there is dsclosedna further modiiication of this inventionl embodying a U-shaped support 10C whichfis `sinlilar to the support l!)b and has extending between the parallel arm I6 thereof a notched lug 11 similar to the lug 11b. The support I0 has extending from the upper or bight end thereof an open or resilient loop, generally designated as 21. The loop -21 includes a lower bar 28 formed integral with the bight of the U-shaped memberl I9e and having extending from one end thereof an upwardly extending -member 29. vAn upper: bar v30 extends at right angles from the extension 29 and overlies the bar 28 in substantially parallel relation and has extending downwardly from the opposite end thereof an extension`3l'1ormed with an upwardly projecting hook 32. The bar28 at a point adjacent the free end of the upper bar 30 islformed with an upwardly projecting lug 33 which provides a reducedspace S between the upper bar 130 and the lower bar 28, so as to thereby clampv a supporting strap within the open loop. The hook or bill 32 provides a means wherebyfthe strap will be detachably locked in the supporting loop. In other respects the `construction shown in Fig. 7 is similar to that shown in Figure 6. 1

What I claim is:

A garter clasp comprising a substantially U- shaped support member having a bight portion and downwardly extending substantially parallel side arms, an upwardly extending blunt ended lug between and carried by the lower ends of said side arms, the side edges of said lug being disposed closely yadjacent to said side arms and formed with notches therein, an upper bar forming a loop with said bight portion and a rubber'cap enclosing said lug and formed with inwardly extending locking members for engaging said notches wherebyl said cap will provide a replaceable covering for said lug for minimizing the wear on stockings engaged o ver said lug and between said lug and said side arms.
