GARMENT HANGER Filed D66. 9, 1946 INVENTOR. [Id/47755771 1.165.
Patented Jan. 24, 1950 UNITED STATES GARMENT HANGER Elizabeth L. Lee and Thomas P. Lee, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application December 9, 1946, Serial No. 715,000
1 Claim. 1
Our invention relates to a garment hanger and has for its principal objects to provide a pair of specially shaped lightweight forms adapted to be removably mounted on the rails of conventional garment hangers, so as to provide fairly wide supports for the shoulder portions of coats, jackets, and the like and holding same in practically the same shape as when positioned on the wearers body and shoulders.
A further object of our invention is, to provide a garment hanger of the character referred to, that is simple in structure, inexpensive of manufacture and capable of being readily applied to, removed from and adjusted lengthwise upon the rail of the hanger, thus enabling coats and jackets of different sizes to be properly supported.
With the foregoing, and other objects in view, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with our invention with one of the shoulder supports in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hanger.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of one of the shoulder supporting blanks.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, I0 designates the curved rail of a conventional form of garment hanger,
.provided with the usual upwardly projecting hanger hook such as I I, and if desired with 9. depending rail I2 of wire, adapted to receive and support trousers, skirts and the like.
Our shoulder supporting forms, identical in shape and structure, are cut, molded, stamped or pressed from thin sheet material such as metal, plastics or composition and each form comprises an elongated, substantially rectangular member l3, the inner end portion of which is of inverted U-shape as seen in Fig. 3.
From its inner end the member l3, the radius of the cross sectional curvature thereof gradually increases until at its outer end, said member has the cross sectional shape of an arc of approximately 60 degrees in length, and with a radius several times greater than that of the inner portion of said member. Thus the two members I! combine to provide a fairly broad transversely curved form that imparts natural shape to the shoulder portions of the suspended coat or jacket.
Formed'integral with each member i3 and depending i'rom or near its inner end, is a hook it, which engages beneath rail l0, and depending from each member, [at or near its outer end, is a pair of spaced fingers l5 which engage the sides of said rail near its outer end.
Depending from member l3 between fingers I5 is a prong l6, which when pressed into the arm l0, assists materially in anchoring the member l3 thereto.
In Fig. 5, we have shown a modified construction wherein a rail engaging hook Ha is formed integral with, by stamping or otherwise, the inner end of the sheet of material forming body I31; and spaced fingers such as I51; and a prong such as lBa are stamped and bent downward from said body at or near its outer end.
After plate l3a is stamped and cut, hook Ma and fingers l5a are bent downward on the dotted lines as shown in Fig. 5.
Thus it will be seen that we have provided simple, practical, inexpensive and readily adjustable means adapted to be applied to the rails of conventional garment hangers for supporting in proper shape, the shoulder portions of coats, jackets, cloaks and the like.
Minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of our improved garment hanger may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claim.
We claim as our invention:
The combination with a garment hanger curved arm, of inverted channel shaped members mounted on said arm, a transversely disposed upturned arm engaging hook depending from each member a short distance inwardly from the inner end thereof, a pair of arm engaging fingers depending from the outer end portion of each member which fingers are spaced apart soas to snugly receive said curved arm and an integral prong depending from each member between the fingers thereof for engagement in said arm.
