This invention relates to wire clamp tools, and I more particularly to a tool for fabricating. and applying wire clamps for hose connections and the like.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved wire clamp tool of relatively simple construction which is easy to operate and which is very efiicient in performance.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved tool for fabricating and applying wire clamps to various types of hose connections and for binding together various objects, said tool including means for forming the wire clamp to its preliminary shape, coiling the clamp for engagement with the object to be secured, tightening the clamp to secured position, locking the clamp in its tightened condition, and depressing the free end portions thereof into flush relationship with the adjacent surfaces of the secured object.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a clamping tool constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the tool of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the tool of Fi we 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional detail view of the coil winding structure employed in the tool of Figure 1, taken on line 4-4 of Figure 8.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the end portion of the tool taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional detail view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure '7 is an enlarged detail view showing a coil forming member employed with the coil winding drum of the tool of *Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a side elevational detail view, partly in cross-section of the coil forming structure employed in the tool of Figure 1, Figure 8 being taken on line 8-8 of Figure 4.
Figure 9 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on line 9-9 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, ll designates an elongated body member comprising parallel side walls l3, l3 extending from one end to the other end of the body member. Secured between the side walls [3 adjacent one end of the body memher II is a filler block 14- of suitable rigid material such as plastic, wood, or the like.
J ournalled in the intermediate portion of body member H is a transverse shaft 15, which extends through the walls l3, l3 and extends outwardly a substantial distance at one side of the body member. Keyed on shaft I5 between the walls l3, I3 is a gear [6. Pivotally mounted on said shaft outwardly adjacent the walls l3, I3 is a lever member ll having a downwardly concave channel-shaped handle portion 18 which overlies the rear portion of body member I I and is formed to fit thereover. A leaf spring 19 is secured at one end to the lever member I1 and bears on the top surface of block I4, thereby biasing lever member H to a raised position. The pivotal mounting of lever I1 is obtained by a pair of side lugs l2, I2 carried by said lever which rotatively engage shaft l5. Said side lugs [3 on each side ofthe body of the tool, the outwardly projecting ends of said shaft being each formed with a notch 24.
Pivotally secured to lever I1 is a pawl 25 which is biased into ratchet engagement with the gear teeth of gear is by a leaf spring 26 secured to the end of block member [4. Said apertureis provided with a shoulder 39 and adjacent shoulder 39 said shaft is formed with a cooperating shouldered recess 40 shaped to engage with shoulder T39 when handle member 31 is rotated counterclockwiseras While a specific embodiment of a wire clamp tool has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What Iaclaimlis: 1
1. A tool for fabricating and applying a wire clamp to a hose comprising an elongated body member, a shaft disposed transversely in said 'body member and carried by the latter, a drum v.:rotatablymounted on said shaft adjacent an end viewed in Figure 8. In this direction .of rotation J5 ,thereof, said drum being provided with a pair of the handle 3! shaft l5 may be rotated thereby. In the opposite directionzofrotation .of-handle 31 drum 35 is rotated independently of shaft "a' tail memberwl formedwith an end spur A'J-and a pair of notched side spurs- 46, 46.
In forming the clamp, :a length 'of wirexis 'cut off and isbent-intoU-shape. Forthis purpose the lower edges of lever member H are notched,:as :shown at 4l,and the adjacent top surface of :body
member H is formed with a transverse groove 18. The mid portion of ,the length of 'wireris placed -'in groove 4'8 andrhandle I8 is depressed,
J causing notches *41'to engage thewire 'and bend 'said wireto the requiredu s'hape. "The free ends o'f the U -shaped*wire are then insertedtin recesses 4 I of 'drum 35-an'd thehandle 3'lis rotated clockwise as viewed in Figure '8, causing the wire'ito'be coiled 'on the drum to its desired clamping 0011- 'figuration. "The coil=wire isthen removedfrom the drum-and is :engaged aroundthe object :to "be clamped, the free ends of the coil1beingrpositioned under the transverse straight :center por- 'tion thereof. Said-free ends are then threaded through bores-3'4, 3'4 ofthe nose pin1member'30 and 'are respectively inserted in the notches I24, '24 of shaft-Z2. With the u-shape'dtnotch .-21cof the nose member in engagement with the trans- "verse straight center portionof the wire Lloop,
handle 3Tis rotated counterclockwise as viewed in Figure 8, causing the free-:endspf'fthe wire'to -be coiled on the laterally projecting. ends :of shaft 22. When the clamp has been;drawn approximately to the desired degree of tightness on :the
I object engaged thereby additional tension is applied thereto by moving :handle :l-B downwardly several times until the :"final :desired tightness 'of the clamp is obtained. The entire tool is :then rotated forwardly over the "fulcrum provided by the transverse straight center :portion of the wire loop, thus bending the wire adjacent said straight portioninto reversed position. Lever 32 is then rotated, wherebythe superfluous wire =is sheared off. The free ends of the wire clamp are then depressed "into substantiallyflush position into'the surface of the object by'hooking spur 45'of the tail member 44=under the straight transverse portion of "the clamp, engagingthe respective wire ends in the notched sidespurs-A'B, 46 and rotating .the tool 'downwardly,'thus em- .bedding said wire ends .inthesurfaceof'the object.
