The spring 28 is adapted to be shielded by means of a shield 34 which is of substantially U-shape in transverse section, being provided with an inclined inner end wall 35, terminating at its lower end in a lug 36 which is secured by a slot 4| through which the spring extension30' is adapted to loosely engage so. that the square 20 upon release thereof by release of the latching means to be hereinafter described, will be springpressed to an extended position relative to the handle l3.

The square 20 is adapted to be releasably latched in countersunk position in the recesses l8 and I9 by means of a spring-pressed latch generally designated as 42. The latch 42 includes an elongated shank 43 which extends loosely through a cylindrical housing 44 disposed in an opening 45 formed in the lower portion of the handle l3. The shank 43 is formed at its inner end with a head 46 slidably engaging in the housing 44, and is formed at its inner end in a tapered or inclined latching bill 46 which is adapted to engage the metal square side 2 l as shown in Figure 9.

The covering 22 for the square is recessed as,

indicated at 41 toperrnit the bill 46 to engage the square side 2|. A spring 48 is disposed within the sleeve or housing 44 bearing at its inner end against the 'head 46 and the outer end of the spring 48 bears against an annular flange 49 carried by the outer end of the sleeve 44. The flange 49 is formed by crimping the outer end of the sleeve 44. The shank 43 extends outwardly of the housing 44 and hassecured thereto an operating knob or button 56 which is fixed to the shank 43 by fastening means When the latch is in its latching position, the inner end of the knob or button 50 will be disposed in contacting relation with the outer end of the sleeve or housing 44. The shank 43 is held against rotation by means of an elongated bar or rod 52 which is fixed at its outer end to the knob or button 59 and loosely engagesin an opening 53 formed in the handle l3 parallel with the housing 44, but'ofiset therefrom.

The saw blade H] may be used in the normal manner for cutting wood or the like, and when the square is in its inoperative position, this square will be seated within the recesses l8 and I9 with the outer surface of the square substantially flush with the adjacent surface of the handle l3. When it is desired to use the square 26, the latching button 50 is pulled outwardly, thereby disengaging the bill or bolt 46 from the side 2| of the square. When the latching means has been moved to released position, spring 28 will swing the square outwardly and this square may then be used to square up the work piece.

,By providing the spring which automatically moves the square 20 to extended position, this 4 square may be used in any angular position desired with respect to the handle 13. In other words, the square 20 may be swung through an arc of with respect to the handle l3 and may be used at any position within this arc.

With a combined handle and square as hereinbefore described, any conventional saw blade may be formed into a combined saw and square as this handle may be mounted on and constructed as a combined handle and square attachment for conventional saw blades.

1 do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

'1. A combined saw handle and square comprising a handle having a recess in one side thereof, a metal square element adapted to seat in said recess having arms at right anglesto each other, one of said arms being formed with half of a hinge on an edge thereof, a plateadapted to be secured to said handle and formed with half of a hinge on .one edge thereof, a hinge pin for swingably connecting said half hinges, spring means carried by said plate and operatively associated with said square constantly urging said square away from seating position in said recess, and latching means carried by said handle and operatively associated with said square for holding the latter in seated position.

2. The device of claim 1 in which said spring means comprises a plurality of eyes mounted on said plate, a shaft supported by said eyes, and

a coil spring formed with a plurality of convolutions encircling said shaft and having one end secured in said plate and the other end secured in said square.

3. A combined saw handle and square compris-i ing a handle having a recess in one side thereof, 1 a metal square element having right angle armsadapted to seat in said recess, one of said arms being formed with a piano type hinge extending the length of an outside edge thereof, a plate carried by said hinge and adapted to be secured: to said handle, spring means carried by said plate and operatively associated with said square constantly urging said square away from seating po sition and latching means operatively associated with said handle and said square for holding the latter in seated position. v
