WILLIAM G. HOWELL, OF CHESTER, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BERNARD G. LAUTH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PILE FOR COMBINED IRON AND STEEL BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,748, dated October 25, 1881.
' Application filed March 152, 1881. N model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. HoWELL,a citizen ot'theUnited States, residingin Chester, Delaware county, Pennsylvania, haveinvented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Oombilled Iron and Steel Bars, ot'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement ill the manufacture of bars of combined Wroughtiron and steel, and the object of my invention is to economize the production of bars of this kind by first casting steel bars of such form and dimensions that they will at once take their places as part of the pile.
In making bars of combined iron and steel it has been the common practice to first roll the steel into bars and then cut the latter into appropriate length, so as to form, with bars of wrought-iron or a wrought-iron casing, a pile or fagot which is heated and rolled, and thus converted into a bar or other object of combined iron and steel. In the perspective view, for instance, the interior of the pileis composed of sections a of a rolled bar of Bessemer steel combined with outer sections, 1) I) d d, and ends 0 e of bars of wrought-iron, the whole being suitably bound together to form a pile, which is properly heated and then rolled.
Instead of first rolling the bars of Bessemer steel and then cutting them into sections, I entirelydiscard the rolling process and cast each bar a of the proper shape and dimensions for the desired pile, this casting being done in open molds, into which the metal can be poured directly from the converter, or closed molds 5 may be arranged on the floor for receiving the metal, the molds in all cases being formed to accord with the character of the pile of which the cast bars are to form a part.
Of course the cast bars of steel will vary in form and dimensions, according to the character of the pile and the condition to which the pile has to be reduced may suggest; hence myinvention is not restricted either to the number or shape of the cast bars or to the 5 character of the wrought-iron envelope; but it is essential ill all cases that the steel bars should be ill the first instance cast of such a shape that they can constitute a portion of the desired pile without rolling.
I claim as my invention The mode herein described of manufacturing bars of combined iron and steel, the said mode consisting in first casting bars of steel of the desired shape required for the pile, then combining these cast bars with an envelope of Wrought-iron, and finally heating and rolling the pile, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification ill the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
\VILLIAM G. HOWELL.
