BEST AVA\LABLE COF" No. 248,883. Patented Oct. 18,1881.
Ws .mveNToR BEST AVAlLABLE CGP UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JAMES W. ANGUS, 0F MACON CITY, MISSOURI.
VIOLIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,383, dated October 18, 1881.
Application led June 1l, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. ANGUS, a citizen ofthe United States, resident of Macon City,in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Violins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ot the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part; of this specitication, and to the letters and figures of ref erence marked thereon.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a representation of a plan of my device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Thisinvention is designed to save thestrings of a Violin or other similar instrument, and to facilitate resti-inging when a break occurs; and the invention consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement ofa series of rollers on a transverse bearing connected to the tail-piece, each roller being designed to have a portion of a string wound upon it, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letterA designates the tail-piece of a violin, and B indi- Cates a transverse pin or bearing connected thereto by the links or arms c.
D Drepresent a series of rollers of spoolform, having marginal Bauges d, which are jourualed on the bearing B; and e represents a small key passing through a perforation in the end ofthe pin, and servingto keep the series of rollers in place.
The strings s ot' the violin are attached to tlletail-piece in the usual manner. Each string' is applied in 'ull length, the surplus being wound upon its roller D, which is next the tail-piece and behind the bridge ofthe instrument. From the roller the string' extends over the bridge to the key at the end ot' the tingerboard.
This device is designed to enable the perforiner to use his strings without cutting them, and facilitates restringing when a break occurs, the surplus being readily unwound from the roller to form the new string.
Having described this invention, what I clairn, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination with the tail-piece ot' a violin or similar instrument, the roller attachment consisting of a pin or bearing, I3, the series of rollers D, and the links or connections c, each roller being` adapted to have a portion ot'a string,r from the tail-piece wound upon it, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. ANGUS.
