Description

(ModeL) A. ANDERSON.
WIRE STRETGHER. No. 248,382. Patented 0015.18, 1881.
3 L I rr I H H 1 U WITN s: INVENTOR: v (Q I W @mm wylw I A BY ATTORNEYS.
IJNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW ANDERSON, OF DUCK CREEK, ILLINOIS.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,382, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed August 24, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW ANDERSON, of Duck Creek, in the county ofWarren and State of Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Wire-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool by means of which the wires of wire tences may be drawn tant for fastening the wires to the posts, and the ends of broken wires may be brought together for mending.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate orresponding parts.
A represents the main lever, which is provided with the points a, which are adapted to engage with the fence-post; and B represents the jaw, which is pivoted to the main lever, as shown. The outer end of thisjaw is made diagonal, as shown at I), to close against the diagonal offset a of the main lever for grasping and holding the Wire to be stretched or drawn taut.
1n the diagonal cut-away place 0 formed in the face of the jaw B is pivoted the clamp (J, and in a similar cut-away p ace, (I, of the lever A is pivoted the clamp I). The diagonal edges of the said cut-away places are preferably slightly undercut, as shown, and the ends of the said clumps, which are made diagonal to correspond with the ends of the cut-away places, are correspondingly beveled to fit in the said under-cuts.
In, use the wires to bejoined or mended are secured by clamps G and D a proper distance from the ends, and the lever andjaw are then brought forcibly together until the ends of the wire lap sufliciently to form the twist or tie.
(ModeL) In using the tool for stretching the wire to be fastened to the posts, the wire is caught and held between the beveled end of the jaw B and the offset a of the lever A. The end of the lever is then placed against the post, and then. power being applied to the lever, the wire will be'drawn taut and can be conveniently secured to the posts.
It will be observed that in stretching the wires the draw will not come centrally upon the lever, but to one side, thus having a tendency to turn the lever. 'lhis difficulty I overcome by placing the spikes in the end of the lever, so that they will stand at an angle, as shown, to engage with the post in such mannor as to hold the lever against all danger of turning.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The lever A, formed with the diagonal cut-away place (1, and provided with the pivoted plate D, in combination with the jaw B, formed with the cut-away place 0, and provided with the pivoted plate G, the lever and jaw being pivoted together substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The tool herein shown and described, consisting of the lever A, provided with the points a, and formed with the offset a, in combination with the jaw B, pivoted to the said lever, the lever being formed with the diagonal cutaway place d, and provided with plate D, and the jaw B being formed with the cut-away place 0, and provided with the pivoted plate (3, as and for the purposes described.
ANDREW ANDERSON.
