Patented Sept. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDING CLOTHES RACK Harry Emerson Turner, Santa Monica, Calif. Application October 31, 1947, Serial No. 783,297
2 Claims.
My invention relates to folding clothes racks and more particularly to a rack which can be folded in a cabinet or attached to a wall or a door which will fold into a small space.
An object of my invention is to provide a rack which will provide numerous arms for hanging wet clothing thereon and yet not extend out into a room more than a very small distance. The arms of the rack, instead of extending straight out from the Wall as most folding racks, ext-end parallel to the wall.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description of the preferred embodiments thereof.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View showing my invention in its folded position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing my invention in a position ready to spread the arms.
Figure 3 is a partial front elevational view showing the arms out.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 on Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5--5 on Figure 1.
A folding clothes rack constructed in accordance with my invention has a hanger I having two bayonet slots 2 and 3 therethrough through which screws, hooks, or other devices can be placed to attach the hanger I to a wall or door. The upper end of the hanger l is bent over to form the top 4 of a clevis. A plate 5 is welded or otherwise attached at 6 to the hanger l to provide the bottom of a clevis. A bolt '1 passes through the clevis to pivotally carry the support 8. Downwardly extending arms 9 and I are mortised into the support 8. Shafts II and I2 pivotally secure the arms l3, l4, l and IE to the arms 9 and 10. When the arms I3 to 16 respectively are pivoted into their extended position, as shown in Figure 4, they are supported in that position by braces II which are pivotally attached to the arms 9 at 18 and a projection 19 carried by each of these braces I! at its free end engage holes in the arms 9 and so as to maintain the arms 13 in a horizontal position and at right angles to the arms 9. Extensions 2!! are pivotally mounted at 2| on the arms I3 and have pins 22 which engage in slots 23 upon the arms 13 to maintain the extensions 20 in a straight line with relation to the arm [3 to form one long continuous rack for clothing.
As will be noted from the drawings, the arms l3 to respectively open in alternate directions so as to form a space between them.
I have found that the angles formed by the brace I1 and the arm 9 must be greater than a 50 angle, otherwise the brace 11 will strike the arm 9 when in folded position and prevent all of the arms, braces, and extensions from folding flat as shown in Figure 2.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention, I am not to be limited to any of the details herein set forth except as described in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a folding clothes rack, a hanger to attach said rack to a wall, a clevis on said hanger having a pivot for a support, a support pivotally mounted upon said pivot and having fixed arms extending at right angles to said support, pivotally mounted arms attached on both sides of said fixed arms, braces pivotally attached to said pivotally mounted arms and having means to hold said pivotally mounted arms at right angles to said fixed arms, said support, fixed arms, pivotally mounted arms and braces having their center lines in the same plane when folded so that all of these parts fold flat and by pivoting said support on said clevis pivot the entire rack will fold substantially fiat.
2. In a folding clothes rack, a hanger to attach said rack to a wall, a clevis on said hanger having a pivot for a support, a support pivotally mounted upon said pivot and having fixed arms extending at right angles to said support, pivotally mounted arms attached on both sides of said fixed arms, braces pivotally attached to said pivotally mounted arms and having means to hold said pivotally mounted arms at right angles to said fixed arms, extensions pivoted on said pivotally mounted arms and having means to maintain said extensions in a straight line from said pivotally mounted arms, said support, fixed arms, pivotally mounted arms, extensions and braces having their center lines in the same plane when folded so that all of these parts fold flat and by pivoting said support on said clevis pivot the entire rack will fold substantially flat.
