1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new improvements in gas furnaces.
Broadly, it is an object of my invention to provide an eificient furnace which will utilize the maximum amount of heat and will give a more rapid and uniform melt.
More particularly, an object is to provide inside walls of the furnace to conform to the shape of the crucible so that the flame envelopes the crucible.
Another object is to provide a furnace cover or series of covers with comparatively narrow flues in order to draw the flame around the crucibles.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of my invention, reference is had to the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of my furnace.
Fig. 2 is a top or plan view with the covers removed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken through line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another furnace for upright or vertical crucibles.
Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of the modified furnace shown in Fig. 4, with the covers removed.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken through line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, numeral l represents one form of furnace of rectangular shape comprising side walls H and end walls l2 which terminate in a base I3 to house a gas pipe M running through the length of the furnace. The walls II and I2 and the base I3 is preferably made of suitable refractory material.
The inside walls l of the furnace are shaped to conform substantially to the shape of the crucible used. In the type shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the crucibles l6 are of circular cross section so that the inside walls are circular leaving sufficient space between the crucibles IE and the inside walls |5 to permit th flames to envelope the crucible.
Along the top of the furnace l0 there is a long opening |l through which the crucibles |6 are placed. The base [3 has a long channel I8, the top edges IQ of which have projecting shoulders 28 upon which the crucibles l6 rest. The space between shoulder 20 permits the flame to pass around the crucibles.
The long opening I! is covered with a number of covers 2| which have extensions 22 which rest 25 which draws the flame around the crucible so that the entire crucible is enveloped in flame. Covers 2| are spaced so that the openings 25 are over the crucibles It. An opening 26 is provided in each cover to facilitate the removal of the cover when desired. The insertion of a stick (not shown) into opening 26 will serve as a handle to remove the cover 2|.
In using the furnace the valve 21 is opened and the gas which passes through openings 28 in pipe I4 is lit. The crucibles l6 containing metal for melting is placed within the long opening I'l upon the projecting shoulders 20. The covers 2| are then placed over the opening H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The flame will pass between the shoulders and around the crucibles l6 since the inside walls l5 are shaped to conform to the shape of the crucible and deflect the flame towards and around the crucibles. The narrow openings in covers 2| create a draft and draw the flame around the top of the crucible so that practically no heat is lost. The covers 2| may be removed as above stated and the crucibles removed from the furnace when the melt is complete.
The furnace walls. may be covered with wood, metal or other desirable material. Such covering of the furnace wall may terminate with legs, as shown in Fig. 1.
The furnace 30 shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 functions in the same manner as furnace l0, described above, except that it is adapted for vertical crucibles 3| which are set upon pegs 32 so that the flame can pass beneath and around crucibles 3|. The inside walls 33 of furnace 30 are of round shape to conform to the shape of crucibles 3|, as best shown in Fig. 5. The base 34 has an opening 35 for gas pipe 36 and also to provide air for the flame.
It is understood that changes may be made in the details of construction, that is, the inside shape of the walls of the furnace would be shaped to conform to the different shapes of crucibles,
