UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SETII LEE, OF MUSEEGrON, MIGHIGAN.
ROWLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,930, dated October .1, 1881. Application filed March 28, 1881. No model.)
To ell 'LOILOM t't mot 1j concern:
Be it known that I, SETIEI LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Musiregon, in the county of Musiregon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bowlocks, and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others slrilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or tignres of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relatesto adjustable rowlocks, and iteonsists in the construction and arrangement of devices, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, in which similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved devices as applied to a boat, and showing the position of the thole-pins when ready for use. Fig. 2 isa plan view Of the top plate. Fig. 23 is a section on the line .7009- Fig. 4 is an elevation, showing the position of the thole-pins when not in use. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 9 i Fig. G is a' section on the line 2 2, and Fig. 'I' is a detail.
To the gnnwale A A' is secured a top plate, B, by means of' the bolts (t (t. This plate is provided with openings CL' cc', for the passage of the tholc-pins C 0, which lt in vertical slotted casings D D, that are attached to the top plate, 13-
At the lower end of each pin 0 is an opening, into which is fitted a curved arm, 0'. This arm is provided at its inner end with a circular groove, c, into which tits "a small pin, 0', that holds the arm in place-and allows it to revolve without becoming detached. The arms 0' O' slide freely in vertical grooves or slots CZ d, that are formed in the casings D D.
To the lower part of the gunwale is Secured a base-plate, E, hy means of screws c 8. This plate supports the lower ends of the casings D D, and is provided with openings c' c', which receive the outer ends of the arms O' C' when the thole-pins are lowered. The inner ends Of the arms 0' G' are iattened or oblong from side to side, so that, while they fit accurately Within the slots d d when sliding lip or down, they may be turned a quarter-revolution at the top or within the ohambered portion ol', so as to bring one of their border Sides against and restingon the shoulders oi" d". Whilein this position the thole-pins projecting through the plate B are held securely in position for rowing. When the pins are lowered within the casings their upper ends are flush with the top of the plate B.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with the gnnwale A A', top plate, B,base-plate E, and. slotted casings D D, having interior shoulders, d" cl", of the adjustable thole-pins C (3, provided With revolving arms 0' G', having their inner ends iiattened or oblon g from edge to edge, whereby they may be made to slide vertically within the slots CZ 61 to raise or lower the thole-pins, and by turninga quarter-revolution at the top within the channbered portion d' will rest upoll the shoulders d" cl and support the thole-pins for use, substantially as specitied.
In testimny whereof I affrix nay signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETEI LEE.
