A hinge pin 20 extends through the bushing I1, and through both pairs of cooperating male and female ear units at adjacent ends of the buckets, hinging the latter together. Cross pins 2 I, retained in seats 22 on the outside female ears I4, prevent rotation and axial displacement of each hinge pin 20.
Removable bearing sleeves 23 are disposed on each hinge pin between, and engaged through, the ears I3 of each male ear unit II each such bearing sleeve being affixed at its outer end to a radial locking plate 25 removably secured to the adjacent ear I3 by a cap screw or rivet 26. The outside ears I4 are offset outwardly suiciently to permit the locking plates 25 to engage lbetween said ears I4 and the adjacent ears I3.
By reason of the described arrangement the bearing sleeves 23 traverse the cooperating ear units adjacent the ends of the channels I0, and, as supported by the pins 20, are driven by engagement with the teeth 21 of the sprockets 3 and 3a. Between the bearing sleeves 23 the peripheral portions of the sprockets 3 run in and are shrouded or guarded by Said channels I0 to prevent access of foreign substance to said sprockets.
Access of any such foreign substance to the sprocket teeth 21 and to the engaged bearing sleeves 23 from the buckets and through the cooperating hinged ear units I I and I2 is prevented by lapping arcuate lips 28 and 29 on said units between the ears thereof; such lips being concentric to the corresponding pin 20, and of a length to always remain in such lapped relation.
A projecting stop 30 on one ear I3 of each male.;
ear unit II engages in a longitudinal slot 3| vrin the lip 30 of the adjacent lip 29 of the corresponding female ear unit I2 so as to prevent inwardly buckling of the adjacent buckets of the chain beyond dead center when free of the sprockets.
Spillage from the buckets at the back, and over the edge 32 of the back walls E cannot occur because said edge terminates close to the tubular housing I6 and traverses a concentric path upon relative hinging between buckets. See Fig. 6.
It will thus be seen that the hinge assemblies of adjacent buckets, and the working portions of the sprockets 3 are effectively shielded against access of material from the buckets.
For stiffening and protecting the buckets, flanges 33 extend from the end walls 5 at opposite ends thereof; said flanges actually being continuations of the side plates 4.
Further strengthening is accomplished, when the bucket is wide, by a, central longitudinal partition 34 in each bucket, which partition includes an ear 35 at one end which enters a pocket 36 in the adjacent bucket and intersects the tubular housing I B and bushing Il thereof for .support on the cross pin 20 intermediate its ends.
placeable; said bushings being preferably slotted and engaged by a projection of Wall I entering 4 the bushing bore, as shown in Fig. 3. This prevents undesired rotation of the bushings.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful and upon which Letters Patent is desired:
1. A bucket elevator comprising a plurality of buckets, the end plates of each bucket being offset intermediate their inner and outer edges, a skirt projecting from along the outer edge of each of the offsets whereby to form channels between the skirts and the sides of the bucket, a pair of spaced apart ears adjacent one end of each channel, and another pair of spaced apart ears adjacent the other end of each channel, the ears on one end of the channel on one bucket matchingly engaging the ears on the opposite end of the channel on an adjacent bucket, said matching ears having co-axial boi es, the spacing between the ears forming a continuation of the channels from bucket to bucket, and a bearing pin journaled in the bores and projecting transversely across thechannels.
2. A structure as in claim 1 including bearing sleeves about the pin, such sleeves being removably supported between the matchingly engaged ear-s.
3. A structure as in claim 2 in which the supporting means for the sleeves comprises a locking plate on one end of the sleeve, said plate being detachably xed to one of the ears.
4. A structure as in claim l, including a tubular housing formed in one wall of the bucket co-axially with the bores in the ears, the bearing pin being journaled within said housing.
5. A structure as in claim 1 including an arcuate lip at the end of each channel, the curve of the lips being concentric with the axis of the pin, the lips at the ends of the channels in one bucket continuously overlapping the lips at the ends of the channels in adjacent buckets,
6. A structure as in claim l in which the buckets each consist of transversely spaced side plates and opposed front and back Walls merging together at their rear edges, a tubular housing formed in the front wall co-axially with the bores in the ears and having its outer surface projecting beyond the faces of the wall, the pin being journaled in the housing, the outer edge of the back wall of one bucket terminating immediately adjacent the outer surface of the vhousing on the adjacent bucket and swinging concentrically of the same with relative vhinging movement between the buckets.
