This invention relates to tubes for dentifrices.
Broadly, it is an object of my invention to provide a device in the uppor portion of a dentifrice tube which will permit different compositions for polishing and cleaning teeth to emerge from the tube in succeeding layers.
The present invention is an improvement upon my Patent No. 1,760,773, issued May 27, 1930.
Different toothpastes on th market at the present time are compositions intended principally for polishing teeth. The removal of tartar and films which cause decay, and the cleaning of the teeth are generally left to the dentist who employs an abrasive material which is generally applied with strong bristles in order to effectively remove such films and foreign matter.
An object of my invention, therefore, is to provide means whereby the user of toothpaste may obtain improved results. My improved invention, therefore, provides for extruding or forcing out one layer at a time from a collapsible container tube of the well known type, which is closed at one end, with a discharge opening at the opposite end that can be adapted with my device to serve to control the flow of different layers of composition arranged alternately in different thicknesses. One layer represents a cleansing agent, while the adjacent layer represents a polishing agent. The cleansing layer serves for two days, and the polishing layer serves for six or seven days, and in this manner of use there is a consecutive course of treatment not at the discretion of the user. This would be beneficial for the teeth and gums, stimulating the circulation in the gums and removing any film on the teeth, which is a fertile medium for bacteria reproduction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a controlling device for use within the collapsible tube to cause a substantially uniform flow of material from portions in each cross section of the tube towards the restricted outlet. I have, therefore, provided a controlling device or controller located in the tube near the outlet thereof so that the contents of the tube will pass through the central opening in a uniform manner and will not cause any of the contents to lodge to any extent upon such controller.
In my previous patent, I have found that the curved surface of the controller caused a quantity of the material to lodge upon such surface which stains or discolors the succeeding layer as it was pressed upward toward the outlet orifice. I have also found that the small holes in my previous patent greatly retarded the flow of the contents of the tube. I have, therefore, provided straight surfaces and very large openings to permit a uniform flow of material without the possibility of material remaining upon the controller.
Another object of my invention was to improve the controller to provide radiating converging channels at the base of the controller to permit the contents to rise uniformly without mixing the different colors within the container. I have also provided a cone within the controller so that the contents of the tube after passin through the enlarged openings are directed upwards through the exit orifice without causing material to lodge within the controller 30 that the possibility of staining succeeding layers is eliminated.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of my invention, reference is had to the following detailed description in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a tube containing alternate layers of cleaning and polishing compositions with the top portion broken away to reveal the upper interior structure.
Fig. 2 is a section taken through line 22 of Fig. 1, a portion of the wall being broken away.
Referring to the drawings, numeral It! denotes a collapsible tube or container preferably transparent and having one end constricted or restricted outlet or neck ll threaded externally, as shown at I2, to receive thereon an internal threaded closure or cap (not shown) and at the other or rear end, a sealing strip [3. The tube may be of the usual size now found in the market and filled With paste of different kinds arranged in layers l4, Hi, It, ll, I8, and i9, the layers l5, l1, and i9 being of a polishing paste, and the layers Id, 16, and it being of a cleansing mixture.
The layers 14 to l9, inclusive, are inserted through the base or rear end of the tube Ill before the sealing strip [3 is applied.
The collapsible tube may be made of any suitable material, such as, tin foil, or a flexible plastic material, such as a heavy cellophane or Pyroxylin which has the advantage of making the various layers visible through the tube. The different layers may be differently colored so that the user can readily see the quantity remaining of each of the layers.
The quantities of the different alternating layers may be inserted in a pre-determined quantity in the tube depending upon the number of times to be used.
The successive layers of material may be colis located inside of the tube and at the outlet as 7 shown in Fig. 1. Controller 20 is comprised of a head 2! in the shape of an inverted cone, with circumferential tapering grooves 22. Above the widest portion 23 of the controller, the sides 24 converge in a straight line to the outside of the neck 25. The neck 25 of the controller 26 is held within the neck by friction so that none of the material within the tube can be forced through between the neck ll of the tube in and the neck 25 of the controller 26. I have provided a series of wide openings 25 at the upper portion of sides 2 Within the central portion of the controller ill, I have provided a conical mernber 27; the central opening 28 of the neck 2%: communicates through the openings 25 with the interior of the tube I9.
By rolling up the bottom of the tube with the sealing member 13, uniform pressure is applied 50 that the successive layers of material within the tube travel up the grooves 22 uniformly, and equalizing the central flow and enter the large openings 26; the material is then directed into the central opening 28 by the conical member 2? so that each successive layer is uniformly expelled from the tube. Since the sides of the controller 28 and the sides of thecone 2'! are-straight, there is no opportunity for any of the material to become lodged upon such surfaces so that the succeeding colored layers are not discolored by the material of the previous layers.

A key may be provided for conveniently rolling the tube from the bottom and upwards in order to assure uniform pressure upon the material towards the exit orifice thus causing the successive layers to come out one at a time.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction without department from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim:
I claim:
The combination with a collapsible container tube which is closed at one end and has a restricted discharge opening at the other end, of means for rendering the flow of material from points in each cross section of the tube to said restricted opening substantially uniform as the tube is uniformly collapsed from its closed end, including a controller device having a tubular portion fitted within said restricted opening and provided at its lower portion with a frustoconical shaped portion having substantially large oridoes, the top of said orifices being substantially in line with the bottom of said discharge opening, the controller device having an inverted conical head, a conical member inthe central portion of said frusto-conical portion to aid in directing the flow of material from said tube, said wide openings communicating with the interior of said tube and said restricted discharge opening to receive paste from the interior ofthe tube.
