Description

(No Model.)
s. CAMPBELL. n WIRE TIGHTENER.- No. 247,612. Patented Sept. 27,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL CAMPBELL, OF NORTH ENGLISH, IOWA.
WIRE-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,612, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed July 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat SAMUEL CAMPBELL, a
citizen of the United States of America, resid-- lass, and clutches arranged to grasp and draw the wires to be tightened together, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my device; Fig. 2, a view of one of the clutches, and Fig. 3 the hook used for hanging my device to the fence when not in actual use.
A is a square or rectangular iron frame, to one endofwhicl is hinged the yoke a, as shown. Through its center runs the windlass b, to the ends of which and outside the frame is attached the crank c, and ratchet-wheel d engaging the pawl c, as shown.
0 are the clutches, one of which is attached to the yoke 00, the other to a rope or chain,f, wound aroundthe windlass b. The unattached ends of the clutches are enlarged, and have formed in them grooves e, in which run the fencewires g, as shown. The keepers h are (No model.)
wedge-shaped, and operate in the grooves c, pressing the fence-wires firmly against the bottom. The keepers are-held against the wires by the stops i, and have suitable teeth to prevent the wires from slipping, as shown in Fig. 2. For convenience the keepers may be attached to the clutches by chains.
70 is a hook for attaching the stretcher to the fence when not in use.
In the operation of my device the opposite ends of the fence-wire to be stretched are caught and held by the clutches in the manner shown. The windlass is then Wound up, and by the consequent shortening of the rope the clutches are drawn together and the wire stretched or tightened. The operation is then completed by twisting the ends of the wire together.
I claim for my device that it is simple, of
easy application and effective operation, and may be used either to stretch new fences or tighten old ones.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a wire-tightener, the combination of the frame A, having yoke a, windlass b,'and rope f, with the clutches 0, provided with grooves 0, stops i, and keepers h, all arranged and operating as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL CAMPBELL.
Witnesses:
ACHILLES MORRIS, WILLIAM WOODLAND.
