Description

June 21, 1949. J. D. CLAWSEY COMBINATION SINK AND DINING TABLE Filed March 27, 1946 INVENTOR. I JUHNIICLA VVSEY Patented June 21, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION SINK AND DINING TABLE John D. Clawsey, New York, N. Y.
Application March 27, 1946, Serial No. 657,571 2 Claims. (Cl. 312169) This invention relates to a dual purpose house furnishing, more particularly a combination kitchen sink and dining table, and provides improvements therein.
In view of the high cost of living space in recent times, families have been compelled to restrict more and more such space. As a consequence, it is a problem to accommodate the usual household furnishings without overcrowding.
The present invention provides a partial solution to the problem of space in providing in one unit a kitchen sink and a dinin table.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combination sink and dining table, with the parts in position for use as a sink.
Fig. 2 is a partial view, similar to Fig. l, with the sink and dining table viewed from the opposite side.
Referring to said drawings, numeral l designates a box. Numerals ll designate legs supporting the box at table height (about 32 inches) and numeral I2 designates a lid, which may be as here shown in two sections, pivoted to one side of the box, as indicated at M, and serving in the closed position as a table top.
The box is provided with a partition is dividing it into two sections I8 and 2B, the section I8 serving as a sink, and the section 20 serving as a drain board and temporary dish receiving receptacle. The box is of moderate depth, six to eight inches, so as to leave space above the legs of a person seated at the device when in use as a dining table.
Numerals 23 and 24 designate hot and cold water pipes extending from risers in the wall to spigots 26 and 21 in the sink section iii of the box. Numeral 30 designates a waste pipe extending from drain openings, one in each of the sections H and I8 oi the box, and leading to a waste pipe in the wall. These pipes are grouped in the transverse mid-plane of the box, so as to leave le room under the box, at each side, and the ipes may be enclosed in a box 33.
The drain section 18 may be provided with a rack 35, of wire or the like, attached to a board 31 at one side of the table, and the rack 35 and board 36 have the character of a drawer which may be pulled out at one side of the table.
Leaves 4B, 4! running lengthwise of the box, may be hinged thereto, as indicated at 43, which serve, when raised and supported by suitable 2 means (not shown) as lateral extensions of the table top.
To enable drinking water to be obtained while the device is in use as a table, a bay 46 may be provided in the box section l8, separated therefrom by a wall 58. A door 59 opening into bay 4% is provided in a side of the box. The spigot 2'! may be located in the bay 46, and this may be of a swing type, so that it may be swung over the wall 48 to run cold water into the sink I8, when this is desired. A small drain pipe 52 may connect bay 46 with drain pipe 30.
Advantageously the box It is set away from the wall sufficiently to enable a bench or chairs to be set between the box and the wall, when the device is arranged for use as a dining table. Other chairs may be set at the opposite side.
Mode of operation When the device is to be used as a dining table, the lid or lids l2 are lowered onto the box [0 and the leaves 4i), 4| are lifted and supported. This provides a table area of adequate area for from 4-. to 6 persons, and two persons seated at each side lengthwise of the table have ample leg room at each side of the box 33 covering the pipes, when the pipe connections are made as illustrated in Fig. 1. If, while the device is in use as a table, drinking water is desired, the door 50 at the side of the box is opened, a drinking glass inserted into the bay 4'6, and water run into the glass from the spigot 21. After withdrawal of the glass, the door 5!] may be closed.
When, in the course of a meal, it is desired to remove some of the dishes from the table, as between the main course and dessert, the dishes are disposed of, without disturbing the setup of the device as a table, by pulling out the drawer 37, placing the dishes in the rack 35 and then pushing the drawer back.
When the device is to be used as a kitchen sink, the side leaves 48 are lowered and the lid or lids i2 raised. Water is run into the sink section 18, dish Washing being done in the usual manner. Wall 48 prevents the water from escaping into the bay 46. Washed dishes may be transferred to the rack 35 where they may drain.
What is claimed is:
1. A combination sink and dining table comprising a box, legs supporting the box, a lid for covering the box, said legs being sufficiently long to provide adequate leg room for persons seated around the box when the lid covers the box and serves as a dining table top, said box having a water-tight open sink-compartment below said 3 lid, said box also being provided with a bay therein beneath said lid, a Wall Within the box, separating the bay-space from the sink-compartment, a door at a vertical side of the box providing access at said vertical side to said bay, and a spigot within said bay beneath said lid from which water may be run into a drinking glass placed through said opened door within said bay with the lid in closed p i inm, ai li when p n, lso prov ing; access to sa d ay an o the spigot located therein.
2. A combination sink and dining table accord; ing to claim 1, wherein said box is provided with a partition dividing it into a sink section. and a4 drain-board and temporary dish storage S.6Cti0n, and further comprising a rack in said drain-board" section and an opening at a vertical S 11 throu h which said rack may be horizontally pulled out when the lid is down and serving as a table top,
said drainboard and temporary dish storage sec tion being accessible from the top when said lid is up.
