MOUNTING BRACKET FOR TRANSFORMERS Filed July 21, 1944 E. J. Magma; E| 3- MMKW Patented June 7, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to improvements in brackets of the class used for mounting a transformer on a pole of a power transmission line.
The invention particularly appertains to a bracket for attachment to a pole in order to support a case in which a transformer is housed.
The main object of the invention is to provide a bracket having an attachment member and ring carried thereby for seating a transformer case in a manner to enable it to be turned as a unit with the transformer for locating the bushings to suit prevailing line conditions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive bracket particularly adapted for a rural service transformer; and one which obviates the use of cross-arms for attaching the bracket to a pole.
A still further object is to furnish a bracket having a vertical attachment member formed with a pair of spaced side flanges outwardly directed for bearing against a pole so that they seat themselves firmly against the pole in the bolting of the bracket thereto to form a secure connection.
A still further object is to produce a bracket having a ring at right angles to the pole in which a transformer case is insertible and ledged by the provision of a shoulder on the case. The structure operates to enable the case to be rotated together with the transformer for positionally locating the bushings to suit line conditions. Accordingly it is not necesary to open the case and it therefore may be permanently and hermetically sealed to preclude exposure to moisture.
The selected embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bracket.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the ring portion of the bracket.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the ring showing the attachment member in section.
Fig. 4 is an aspect of the bracket with the transformer and case supported thereby.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings of the invention.
The bracket comprises an attachment member 5 and a ring 6. The member 5 is an upright element of a suitable length for fitting longitudinally of the top reach of an ordinary wooden pole of a transmission line for rural service. Said member has continuous flanges 1 at its sides which are directed outwardly from said ring and integral with a web or back wall 8. This forms a bracket of a u-shaped cross section which may be constituted of a length of structural steel channel.
Said member is attached to the pole by placing the edges of the flanges against a side thereof 2 and inserting bolts or equivalent fastening devices through apertures 9 in the back 8 and through holes in the pole. Preferably said member is bolted at its top and bottom.
The ring 6 is horizontally disposed at the lower end of the upright and permanently united thereto by welding. The ring is a band metal element of sufiicient ruggedness to sustain a transformer and its case. Desirably the ring is circular for reception of a round case indicated at I0 which is supplied with circumferential beads or flanges II which present a ledge face by which the case is seated in the ring. The case together with the transformer is hoisted to the top of the pole and then lowered into seating engagement with the ring. In this lowering operation the case and transformer may be turned as a unit to bring the bushings, indicated at [2, into a desirably angular disposition to suit line conditions. The bracket simplifies the mounting of the transformer and enables a case to be used in which the transformer is permanently encased and hermetically sealed.
The advantages and utility of the bracket will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art from the preceding description.
What I claim is:
A mounting of the class described comprising a bracket formed of a channel member and a substantially circular ring, the channel member being vertically arranged with its back portion welded to the ring so that the flange portions thereof are adapted to bear against a side of a pole in the securing of the channel member directly to the pole, the ring being extended at right angles to the channel member and braced at its juncture therewith by means of lateral arms Welded to the channel member and to the ring to form therewith a sturdy structure suitable for supporting a rural transformer sealed in a case having bushings on its top end displaced from the vertical axis thereof and having a shoulder about its girth whereby it is seated loosely in said ring for rotary adjustment in locating the bushings to suit prevailing line conditions.
