Figure 4 is a fragmental, sectional detail, illustrating the structure of theelements involved and method of mounting and assembling the elements upon the side rails of the sashes for pivotally engaging the lower ends of the said guide or brace strips.
The drawing represents a window unit or assembly referred to generally at 5, the same being of the conventional elongated and rectangular form, and including the sill pieces 6, side rails I seated upon the ends of the sill, and the usual upper cross members (not here shown) for connecting the upper ends of the side rails of the frame.
It is to be noted that in applying this invention to the described form of window unit, the inner faces of the side rails are planar in finish, the usual inner guide strips for the lower, inner sash being omitted, as well as the usual medial parting strips for defining the guide-ways of such conventional window unit. However the outer guide strips 8 may be retained if desired, since in either case and whether retained or omitted, these outer guide strips are not involved in this present invention. These said inner faces of the side rails 1 are grooved or channeled longitudinally in transverse alignment at each side of the frame with parallel, spaced and aligned guide grooves or channels 9, these grooves being preferably of lesser width than the thickness of the side rails of the sashes as mounted within the frame 5. These sashes include an inner, lower sash l0, and an outer, upper sash ll, assembled in conventional manner side by side within the frame 5 and adapted to slide over one another in the process of opening or closing the said sashes.
In accordance'with this invention, follower or brace strips I2, of the approximate lengths of the side rails of the sashes, are slidably mounted within the grooves or channels 9 of the side rails I of the window frame, the thickness of these strips being preferably but not necessarily slightly less than the depth of the guide grooves or channels so as to clear the lateral edges of the sashes in the operation of the invention and in'tilting the sashes inwardly from the window frame. The brace strips I2 are to be made of rigid and stiff material, metal or otherwise as desired, and are channeled along their outer sides as disposed in the window frame, for conveniently receiving the conventional sash chains or flexible steel ribbons l3 which at their inner ends are riveted as at H to the upper ends of the brace strips 12. These chains or ribbons are extended upwardly over pulleys journaled in the upper ends of the side rails I of the window frame, the outer ends thereof being then depended through wells formed in the frame and connected to sash weights, all in conventional manner and not here shown. The
lower, lateral corners of the sashes l0 and II are recessed or chambered out as indicated at [5,
and pivot-bolt bores l6 are extended laterally outward therefrom in the planes of the sashes and opening into the grooves or channels 9 of the rails I of the frame. Pivot bolts l1 are slidably passed through the bores 16, and at their outer .ends are adapted to slide into aligned holes [8 .formed through the lower ends of the brace strips I2, all as illustrated in detail in Figure 4. The recesses 15 are preferably cut upwardly into the ends of the lower horizontal rails of the sashes ill and l I, and with the sashes removed from the window frame the bolts I! are inserted through the bores I6, fully inward and so that the outer ends of these bolts will fall flush with the edges of the sashes. The sashes are then positioned properly within the window frame, with the lower margins of the sashes aligned with the lower ends of the brace strips l2, and the bolts [1 are then pushed outwardly through the holes IB formed as aforesaid in the lower ends of the strips. The bolts I! may be fixedly secured in place in operative position by means of nails I9 passed through the apertured inner ends of the bolts and into the body portions of the lower rails of the sashes, as shown in Fig. 4. Metal reinforcing strips 2|! may be secured by screws H to the lateral edges of the lower ends of the sashes and apertured in alignment with the holes I8 and bores [6, for passing the bolts 11 and for supporting said bolts in the operation of the sashes, thus relieving from wear the conventional wooden rails of the sashes.
, Elongated latches, channeled and U-shaped in cross-section, and here indicated at 22, are pivotally pinned as at 23 to the upper ends of the brace strips l2, for which purpose the medial webs of these strips are cut away at their ends, as indicated in Figure 3. The upper horizontal faces of the upper cross rails of the sashes Ill and II are grooved or channeled out as shown at 24, in the plane of the sashes, to provide elongated sockets adapted to receive and seat the latches 22 when the latter are turned inwardly and down into said sockets. These latches are preferably mounted as shown, with their channeled sides turned downwardly, when entered into their sockets 24. In Figure 3 the latch at the left hand side of the sash is shown as turned down into its socket, while at the right hand side the latch is shown as raised and elevated from the socket. In order to facilitate the operation of these latches, the sockets 24 are enlarged at their ends as shown at 2501., so that the operator's finger may be inserted therein for lifting the latches. The sockets 24 are also formed with the laterally off-set notches 24b for engaging th studs 22a which are rigidly and laterally extended from the latches 22, and thus when these latches are turned down into the sockets they function to effectively look the upper ends of the sashes to the guide or brace strips, the lower ends of the sashes being supported as already pointed out, by means of the pivot bolts IT as entered through the holes I8 of the strips l2. If desired the sockets 24 may be lined wtih metal liners in conventional man: ner, and not here shown.
At the upper ends of the sashes l0 and II, when these sashes are both in their lowered positions, the grooves or channel-s 9, as formed as aforesaid in the side rails l of the window frame, are chambered or mortised out laterally at one side of said channels, so as to provide somewhat elongated and laterally off-set rectangular recesses 9a, disposed in planar alignment with the studs 22a of the latches 22. Oblong metal hous ings 25 are provided and nicely fitted and secured within the recesses 9a, these housings being open on their sides adjacent the channels or grooves '9, as indicated at 2511., and otherwise closed except for the narrow openings 25?) formed through the lower ends of the outer sides of the housings, and through which openings the studs 22aof the latches 22 may enter into the housings as the latches are raised up or elevated in the operation of the invention in manner later pointed out.
It is to be noted that the housings 25 of the inner channels 9, for the inner and lower sash l 0, are so disposed and upwardly spaced in transverse alignment within said channels, that when the inner and lower sash I is lowered into contact with the window sill 6, the latches 22 at each side of this sash may be raised or turned upward and the studs 22a of these latches will then exactly align with and enter into the housings through the narrow openings 25b, and it is to be noted that the sash Ill may then be raised slightly to the extent of the length of the housings 25, for enabling the sash to clear the top of the sill 6 as the sash is tilted inwardly. The releasing of the latches 22 of course enables the sash to be thus tilted inwardly, as there is no other impediment to action. The sash will then lie approximately horizontally across the sill, and will be held in that position by the lugs or studs 22a, which impinge against the upper ends of the housings Z and prevent further upward movement of the lower end of the sash.
Similarly, the housings 25 of the outer channels 9, for the outer and upper sash II, are disposed somewhat above the housings as just described for the inner and lower sash l0, so that when this sash H is lowered in turn after the lowering and inward tilting of the sash l0, and the latches 22 of the sash H are raised, the studs 22a of the sash II will pass into the housings 25 of the outer channels, and the sash ll may then also be tilted inward, over and upon the sash II], where it will similarly lie horizontally supported for cleaning or the like.
It is thought that from the foregoing description, taken with reference to the drawing, the construction, mode of operation and use of the invention will be fully understood, and while a specific embodiment of the invention is here shown and described, the structural features as shown may be changed or modified in minor particulars as may be desired, within the scope however of the appended claim.
We claim:
In a window frame and sash unit of the kind described and including a sill having its inner ledge raised above the outer ledge, and there being spaced side rails extended vertically at the ends of the sill in transverse, parallel alignment 6 and formed with guide channels longitudinally extended along their inner sides, and including a window sash slidably mounted within the frame with the lateral edges of the sash aligned over the guide channels of the side rails, and including brace strips slidably mounted within the guide channels of the side rails and of the approximate length of the sash, and there being pivotal connections between the lower ends of the brace strips at each side and the side rails of the sash, whereon the sash may be tilted inwardly, latches hinged to the upper ends of the brace strips and arranged to turn down into sockets as formed in the upper horizontal faces of the upper cross rail of the sash for locking the sash to its normal, vertical and operative position in the frame, the said latches however being adapted to turn upwardly from the sash and vertically into the guide channels of the side rails of the frame, and being provided with laterally extended studs, there being recesses formed and extended laterally at one side of the guide channels of the side rails, elongated metal housings mounted within said recesses, the same being closed on all sides except the sides facing and opening into the guide channels of the side rails of the frame, and except for inwardly opening cut-outs for receiving the said laterally extended studs of the latches as mounted on the sash with the latter in lowered position in the frame, whereby the studs may enter into the housing as the latches are raised, and the sashes then be turned down horizontally inward over the raised inner ledge of the sill, the length of the housing permitting the lower end of the sash to travel upwardly relative thereto for flatly positioning the sash across the sill.
