arcuate shape to conform to the interior contour of the upstanding flange ill of the closure member 8 and is provided with an offset handle 40 adapted to be gripped by an operator for moving the same.
The bracket 20 likewise is formed with its inner edge rolled to provide journal bearings 42 and 44, adapted to rotatably receive a. threaded eye bolt 46 which is adjustably positioned therein through the medium of a nut 48 threadedly engaging the shank of said eye bolt. The bearing 44 is internally threaded to engage the threads of the bolt 46, while the bore of bearing 42 is smooth and of such a size as to receive the threaded end of the bolt 46. The eye bolt 46 is formed with the eye 50 adapted to provide a pivotal connection through the medium of the pin 52 for the oppositely disposed link elements 54 and 56 which are connected to the pin 52 adjacent one of the ends thereof. As noted in the drawings, the link elements 54 and 56 are of arcuate formation to clear the bracket l8 and the connection for the lever thereto and have their outer ends pivotally secured to the lever 34. by means of the pin 58,
The link and lever assembly is operable to contract the ring 42 about the periphery of the drum and closure member as above described. The ring may be moved into opposed relation to the beaded edge 8 of the drum and the flange ID with the linkand lever mechanism annularly disposed with respect thereto, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The lever can be readily grasped by the operator when in that position and the same moved until the ring is in tight engagement with the drum and closure mechanism, as shown After this has been eifected, the link and lever mechanism, through the pivotal connections 46 and 25, respectively, may be moved downwardly into substantially the plane of the closure 8 and the lever moved into locked engagement with the bracket 6, as clearly shown in Figure 9 of the drawings. When in this position, the pin 62 may be inserted within the aligned openings provided in the bracket 60 and lever 34 for holding the clamping mechanism in operative position.
When it is desired to remove the closure member 8 from the drum 4, the lever 34 may be released from its engagement with bracket 60, after which the same may be moved into a position as shown in Figure 3 and pressure released therefrom to allow the ring Hi to expand.
In order to facilitate the contracting of the ring l4 in the event the operator desires to do so when the lever 34 is in substantially the plane of the cover, the lug 64 is provided and is secured in dependin relation to the bracket IS in a position to engage the upstanding flange IU of the closure member and to prevent outward movement of the ends of the contractible ring when pressure is applied to the lever 34 to contract the ring. It is to be noted that when the lever 34 is finally moved into closed position, the lug 64 does not engage or in any way touch the upstanding flange of the closure member.
With the above structure, particularly characterized as involving the use of ring contracting mechanism which may be moved into various angular positions with respect to the plane of the closure member, it is possible to readily and easily contract the ring without injury to the operator,
which is one of the undesirable features of such mechanism where the lever 34 must be operated in substantially the plane of the cover.
While I have herein described and upon the 4 drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the inven tion is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features without departin from the spirit of the invention.
