Filed Aug. 30, 1946 INVENTOR ES SlE HOUGH HER ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 15, 194.9
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMB Essie Hough, Chicago, Ill.
Application August 30, 1946, Serial No. 693,935
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates o combs. ularly, it relates to sectional combs.
I have provided, according to my invention, a comb made in sections which are pivoted at their ends.
' I am familiar with combs such as those shown in Patent Number 148,738 to Mullee, Number More partic- 89,212 to Gallup and Number 161,661 to Brown.
My comb is designed for hair styles, for example, the curled short bobs, although it has advantages in practically all styles. For example, the Gallup comb, in Number 89,212, could not possibly be used to accomplish the advantages of my invention.
According to the principle of my invention in the preferred form, I provide three sections which may be alike, each having teeth of any kind desired, preferably of medium length, such as those, for example, shown in the drawing. Each of these combs, at their ends where they meet, are provided with apertures for rivets.
This structure has the advantage of providing pivoting sections. For example, in a smoothcrown "hair-do," for example, the first step, with my comb, is to comb the hair down on the back and sides, and place the middle section in place, with the teeth down; then the next step is to hold this hair down properly in place with the hand, while the corresponding section of the comb of my invention is pivoted downwardly in place into the hair, with the teeth downward to hold the combed hair neatly in place. The same procedure is followed with the opposite side.
The single long-curved comb is impractical and difllcult to handle. For example, when it is desired to keep the hair flat on the crown of the head by means of the long curved single comb, if one gets the hair anyway near properly under the comb at the back of the head, much is lost when the comb is tilted to get the hair on the side of the head, and also the hair on the side of the head is not kept down as intended.
By means oi my sectional comb, I have provided a very simple effectual manner of obtaining the hair in a smooth crown in a very easy comfortable manner. After the hair has been combed flat, as usual, the middle section is forced down into place, and then all that is necessary is to tilt the side sections, one after the other into the hair on the sides of the head, to hold that in place.
These and other objects and advantages will appear'and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of the comb of my invention shown applied to a head.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the comb.
Fig. 3 is a view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which I have shown the preferred form for the purpose of illustrating the principle of my invention, I have shown a comb 5, having three sections, to wit: 6,] and 8.
I In the form shown, the sections are preferably curved to form a generally curved comb.
Each section has an aperture 9. A rivet I0 has a large flattened head Ii and a stem i2, which is adapted to extend through adJacent apertures 9 at the ends of the sections.
The rivet ID has a second flattened head IS.
The structure and advantages of my invention, it is believed, will be suflicient without further description, from the foregoing.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variation and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a comb of the character described, the combination of: a central-comb section comprising a curved back and a plurality of teeth extending from one edge of said back, and end-comb sections each pivotally connected respectively to each end of said central section, each of said endcomb sections comprising a back having substantially the same curvature as the curvature of said central-comb section with teeth extending from that edge thereof which corresponds to the edge from which the teeth extend in said central-comb section, each of said end-comb sections having a cross dimension in the direction of the teeth which is substantially the same as the corresponding dimension of the central-comb section.
2. In a comb of the character described, the combination of: a central-comb section comprising a back of substantially uniform width which is curved to provide a bowed construction and a plurality of teeth of substantially uniform length integrally Joined to said back and extending from one edge thereof, an end section comprising a back of substantially uniform width that is curved 8 to provide a. bowed construction or substantially the same curvature as the back of said centralcombsection and having a plurality of teeth of substantially the same length as the teeth of the central section extending from the edae thereof, corresponding to the edge from which the teeth extend in said central section, a pivotal connection between the end portions of the backs 01 said central and end sections, a second end section which is a. substantial duplicate of said first end section, and a pivotal connection between the back of said second end section and the other end of the back of said central section.
