3 Claims. "(01. 197-113.)
The invention relates to a line ruling device for typewriters, and more especially to an attachmerit to the latter for ruling vertical and horizontal lines on stencils for mimeographing forms or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character, wherein a typist operating a typewriter can do a neat job of running vertical and horizontal lines on a stencil for mimeographing in less than twentyfive per cent of the time requiredto run the same lines with a typewriter, and considerably less time than is required to do the same job ofrunning the lines by measuring and drawing them on the stencil.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character, wherein it is .adjustably fittedto a typewriter. so that the length of the lines can be set for determined work, and such lines will be true and properly spaced in accordance with requirements, the attachment being of novel construction, and unique in the arrangement of its parts and assembly with the typewriter machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in operation, readily and easily adjusted, strong, durable, possessed of few parts, thus economical in repair or replacement of parts, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the attachment constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is an end view of the device.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the hanger plate for the attachment Figure 6 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the line marking carrier.
Figure '7 is a top plan View of a typewriter showing the attachment in applied position for vertical line marking.
Figure 8 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 88 of Figure 7 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 9 is a plan view showing the vertical linedworkresultant from the attachment on a mimeographing form;
Figure 10 is a fragmentary elevation showing the attachment in position relative to the typewriter for horizontal line marking.
Figure .11 is a sectional view taken approxi-. mately on the line H-II of Figure 10 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure. 12 is a plan view of a piece of work showing it marked with horizontal and vertical line markings; as a mimeographing form;
. Figure 13 is a top plan view of thestructure shown in. Figure 10."
Similar reference characters indicate corre-- sponding parts throughout: the several views in.
the drawings.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the l-ine marking device constructed 'in accordance with the invention, comprises an. elongated follower plate III, which has the major portion thereof of substantially square shape and flat with a uniform thickness .to give strength and rigidity. thereto; This plate I0 .is formed with an .out-. wardly tapered extension H, which at the. tip thereof is provided with a bifurcated or 'forklike hearing l2,it beingcurved away from the plane of the extension." This bearing carries an axle It for a roller or wheel i l, provided with a peripheral blunt knife marking edge l5.
Formed at the opposite side edges of the plate ill are channeled guide flanges l6 which are on the side with the bearing 12, and slidably receive companion edges of a hanger or carrier piece l'l, which is of substantially rectangular shape, and of a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the plate ID. This piece H has cut and turned therefrom a ledge tongue or ear it which is disposed at substantially right angles to the plane of the said piece and plate when interfitted with each other.
The line-making or marking device constituting the present invention and hereinbefore described is ior use with a typewriter or like machine, and in such use is adapted to be arranged in front of the cylinder or roller platen IS, on which is held the paper 20 adapted to receive the desired typewritten matter, and vertical and horizontal lines 2| and 22 to be produced by the line making or marking attachment, as has been fully explained. It is understood that the platen I9 is mounted to turn in the usual manner in the carriage 23, adapted to travel sidewise from 3 right to left and from left to right, as is well known.
As shown in Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, the line making attachment is mounted by hand on a supporting rail 24, which carries the guide rolls 25 of the typewriter, the latter being for holding the paper 20 about the platen l9, and in this mounting the plate 10 with the piece I! saddles the said rail 24 to have the ledge tongue or ear l8 contact the latter, with the roller located vertically aligned with the stationary type bar guide 26 of the typewriting machine, so that the attachment assumes the position, as best seen in Figure 8, with the index finger and thumb of the left hand of a person holding such attachment by hand with relation to the paper 20'and the platen l9 about which the said paper is coiled for the marking of vertical lines on the paper, as per the form 21 seen in Figure 9 of the drawings.
In Figures 10, 11 and 13 of the drawings, the line making attachment is disclosed positioned with respect to the platen IQ of the typewriting machine for the marking of horizontal lines on the paper 20, as per the form 28 shown in Figure 12 of the said drawings. These lines 2| and 22, respectively, can be spaced apart the required distance by changing the position of the carriage 23 and turning the platen l9 therein, or by step feeding the platen in the usual manner and moving the carriage from right to left, or from left to right, as may be required. In Figure 13 of the drawings, the attachment is angled approximately at 45 degrees with relation to the platen l9, and this is about the proper relation for the marking of stencils for mimeographing work. The attachment in each instance of positioning is held by hand until the marking of the lines has been accomplished, this being done with ease and dispatch.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the kind described, comprising a marking roller supporting plate having a tapered extension terminating in a bifurcated portion, a marking roller carried by said plate bifurcated portion, a carrier piece, channelshaped means depending from said supporting plate and receiving said carrier piece for sliding movement of said plate relative to said carrier piece, and hanger means extending substantially at right angles from the carrier piece and adapted to be manually held against a part of a typewriter carriage, while said plate and its roller are manually held in the desired relation to said carrier piece and to a platen in said carriage.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a marking roller supporting plate having a tapered extension terminating in a bifurcated portion, a marking roller carried by said plate bifurcated portion, a carrier piece, means slidably interfitting said supporting plate and said carrier piece together for sliding movement of said plate relative .to said carrier piece, and hanger means extending substantially at right angles from the carrier piece and adapted to be manually held against a part of a typewriter carriage, while said plate and its roller are manually held in the desired relation to said carrier piece and to a platen in said carriage.
3. A line-marking device consisting of a flat plate portion, a tapered portion integral with, and extending in lengthwise alignment and substantially in the same plane as, said flat plate portion, spaced support members terminatin said tapered extension, a marking roller between said support members, means on said support members rotatably carrying said roller, flanges extending lengthwise of and spaced from said fiat plate portion, means attaching said flanges to the sides of said flat plate portion to thereby form therewith channel-shaped grooves, a fiat mounting plate slidably mounted within said channelshaped grooves, and a tongue extending at right angles from and transversely of said mounting plate.
