NECKTlE-SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,295, dated August 30, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DAMON, of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Necktie-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shields for neckties, forming the foundation or front supporting portion of the necktie, said shield being provided with a down wardly-projecting pin adapted to engage with a strap of the tie which passes around the neck, and thus confine the tie in position.

The invention has for its object to enable the shield to be provided with a securely-attached pin at a very slight expense; and to this end the invention consists in a shield of this class provided with an ordinary headed pin and a cup-shaped plate or staple adapted to quickly and securely attach the head of the pin to the shield, as I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Fig. 3 represents a section, somewhat enlarged, on the line m m, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 respectively represent side and 0 top views, on an enlarged scale, of the pin-attaching device. Fig. 6 represents a modification, said figure being a top view. Fig. 7 represents a section on the line y 3 Fig. 6, showing also the pin in position.

In all these figures similar letters refer to the same parts.

In the drawings, S represents anecktie-shield made of stiff press-board or press-paper, and having its upper edge curved to fit the neck in the usual manner.

19 represents a headed pin, which is preferably of the kind in general use, placed upon the front side of the shield S, so that the point of the pin will project downwardly from the I lower edge of said shield, preferably about a quarter of an inch, for the purpose of engaging with the neck-strap of the completed tie for confining the same in position upon the neck of the wearer. The projecting point of the pin 19 makes an acute angle with the lower edge of the shield, as usual, and is suitably secured to the shield, so as to prevent lateral movement of the point of the pin, preferably by passing said point through the shield at a,

so that the pin will project from the back side of the shield; but the point may, if desired, be confined by the use of an ordinary wire staple passed over the pin upon-the front side of the shield and clinched upon the back side thereofwithout departing from the spirit of my invention.

The head of the pin is covered and securely confined by means of a metallic cup-shaped plate or staple, I), having the points 0 0, adapted to be passed through the shield S from the front, and to be turned down or clinched upon the back, as shown in Fig. 2.

The plate I) is outwardly convex in form, having an inner cavity or recess adapted to receive the head of the pin, as shown in Fig. 3, the head being thereby confined and prevented from movement in any direction, so that the pinp can neither be displaced sidewise 0r longitudinally.

It desired, the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7 may be employed, the cup-shaped plate I) in this instance being provided with an orifice, 6, through which the shank of the pin may be passed before being applied to the shield.

In other respects the device is the same as previously described.

It will be seen that it is essential that the pin 9 should have an enlarged head to be covered and held by the cup-shaped plate, these two elementsviz., the head and the cupshaped plate-preventing the rear end of the pin from moving in any direction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination ofaneck tie-shield, aheaded o band-holdin g pin suitably secured to the shield to preventlateral movement of the point of the pin, and a cup-shaped plate or staple, b, covering and securing the head of the pin to the shield, and provided with points 0 0, adapted 5 to secure said plate to the shield, as set forth.
