Description

Jan. 25, 1949. w. H. CURTIS READING STAND Filed Dec. 14,1945
INVENTOR WW /h" W MWA- m ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 25, 1949 UNITED STATS PATENT rice 7 READING STAND William H. Curtis, Pass Christian, Miss.
Application December 14, 1945, Serial No. 634,988
My invention relates to reading stands. An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having provision for universal adjustment whereby the stand is adapted for understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 is an isometric view of the stand showing an adjusted position of a supporting table in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a top plan-view showing a base member and an angle member.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale of a supporting table.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the table used for supporting sheet material such as a newspaper.
Fig. 5 is a detail end view showing the table used for supporting a newspaper.
Fig. 6 is a view showing a slightly differentconstruction of the base.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, the numeral 7 designates a base member adapted to rest on the fioor. In Fig 6, the numeral I designates a modified construction of the base member. A tube 8 extends up from the base member. in the tube 8 which carries a hand screw 10 by which the rod may be adjustably held in raised or lowered condition. A tubular member II is supported by the upper portion of the rod and carries a hand screw I2 by means of which the member H may be securely clamped to the rod, or the screw l2 may be so set that it will prevent accidental turning of the member H while permitting a moderate amount of force to turn it for adjustment around the rod.
An angular member l3 has its lower arm secured to the top of the member H. A bracket member l4 carries'a screw l5 which extends through a hole in the middle portion-of the angle member l3 and is then provided with a thumb nut It. A supporting table II is securely fastened to the bracket member M. The nut' l6 serves to hold the table I! in adjusted tilted position and also permits the table to be swung around through 360 with relation to the angle member I3.
A rod 9 is telescopingly received- 21 Claims. (01. 45-'e0) One horizontal edge of the table I! is provided with a ledge 18 which as shown in Fig. 1
serves as a rest for the lower side of a book or magazine indicated at B. The table I1 is provided with two horizontal slots l9 which at their closed ends terminate in notches 20. A hole 2! in the upper arm of the member l3 serves for attachment of an article such as an ash tray.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings. The hand screw l2 permits the table to be adjusted horizontally through 360 whereby it may be placed in anyposition most suitable for the reader. The hand screw it] permits the tableto be raised or lowered. The nut '16 not only permits the table to be tilted at an angle best suited to the reader, but also permits the table to be reversed back for front in case it should be desired to do this. The slots l9 serve to hold sheet material such as a newspaper indicated at P in Figs. 4 and 5. As shown in these figures the sheet material is threaded through the slots and then by a slight sidewise movement is drawn into the notches 20 so as to be securely held in place. As the reading progresses the sheet material may be released from the notches so that another portion may be moved into reading position.
I claim:
1. In a reading stand, the combination of a table containin a pair of horizontal slots serving to hold sheet material such as newspapers, a support for said table, and means for adjustably holding said table for tilting movement with relation to said support. I
- 2. In a reading stand the combination of a table containing a pair of horizontal slots terminating at their closed ends in notches, said slots and notches serving to hold sheet material such as newspapers, a support for said table, and means for adjustably holding said table for tilting movement with relation to said support.
' WM. H. CURTIS.
