Patented Dec. 28, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE j GAS COCK William S. Kincaid .Detroit, Mich., assigner to The Roberts Brass Manufacturing-Company, Detroit, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Appiicatmn september 25, 1944, serial No. 555,683
The invention relates to gas cocks more par ticularly designed for use in controlling gas burners. Y s j l It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction by which the cock may be adjusted to a plurality of diierent positions for imposing different restrictions to' the ilow of gas so as to correspondingly regulate the flame of the burner. To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth. V

Fig. 3 is an elevation of thevalve-plate;
Fig. 4 is a cross section onA line 4v4, Fig.` 1;
Fig. 5 is a cross section on line `55, Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a similar section with the latch member removed;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the latch plate detached; i i
Fig. 7A is a side elevation thereof; i
Fig. 8 is an enlargedsection through fthe cock4 on line 8-8, Fig. 1;
Figs. 9, 10 and 11 are views `simi1ar--to.Figi` 8 showing the plug valve in different positions of adjustment; l i f Fig. 12 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the valve plate in position but with the cap removed; and 1 n Fig. 13 is an elevation of the plug' Valve` and latch plate removed from the casing.
The cock is of the type comprising a casing A having a tapering rotary hollow plug valve B therein provided with a port C for" registering with the inlet passage D in the" casing. The outn let passage E is in alignment with the plug and is in constant communication with the chamber therein. Thus, when the plug valve is turned with the port C out of registration withthe passage D, communication between the 'passages D and E is cut off. On the other hand, when the port C is in full or partial registration with the passage D, gas will ilow from the latter to the outlet E.
'I'he construction as thus far described visfthe ordinary construction of gas cock.` With this it is possible to regulate theflo'wof gas therethrough by turning the plug intov different positions but it is difficult to accomplish this with fany desired degree of accuracy. It is, therefore, the primary object of my invention `to obtain al vconstruction in which different positions of adjustment of fche valve will predeterminedly control the ilow ofithe `accomplished by the gas therethrough with great accuracy. This is `following construction. Within "the casing A at one side thereof is formed a chamber F which is connected to the inlet passage D by a bypass G. The chamber F is also connected with a plurality of ports I-I, I leading -to the seat for the plug valve B. These ports are so positioned that the port C of the valve may be registered with each when completely out of registration with any lother port or with the passide of the recess F which plate engages a shoulder in aj' nipple A on the casing `A. The plate is securedto the casing by screws L and the metering pins J `and J extend respectively into the "ports H and I and may be adjusted to variably 4restrict the same. are engageable for adjustment by a screwdriver,
Slotted heads J 2 on these pins and springs J3 between said heads and the plate K hold the same in adjusted position. The plate K and pins J and J are enclosed by `a cap M threadedly engaging the nipple A.
The valve B has an operating stem N extending outward therefrom being flattened' on one side for non-rotatably engaging a socket in the handle member O. To hold the Valve in itsI different positions of adjustment, I have provided a latch mechanism comprising a member P slidably and non-rotatably engaging' Ythe flatten stem N. A spring Q on the stem yieldably urges the member P in an outward direction. R is a plate secured to the casing A by screws R and apertured for the passage of the stem N. This plate has a plurality of rounded projections R2 forengagement with recesses P' in the member P. These projections and recesses are so located as to engage with each other in the different positionsof adjustment of the valve in which the port C is registered respectively with the passage D, the p ort Hor the port I.` The spring Q yieldably presses the member P against the plate 'R so that the projections R? will snap into latching en gagement with the recesses P' in each position of adjustment but without interfering with further adjustment when desired. A projection P2 on the member P engages shoulders A2 on the casing A to limit the rotative adjustment of the stem. Thus, in use the operator by turning the handle O can adjust the cock from the position shown in Fig. 9 where the gas is completely cut oi to any one of the positions respectively shown in Figs. 8, l and 11. vIn Fig. 8 the flow Qt lgas from the inlet D to the outlet E is unrestricted. In Fig. 10 the flow through the port I is restricted by the metering pin J and in Fig. 11 the flow through the port H is restricted by the metering pin J.
To adjust the valve for use with .diner-.ent line gas pressures, the cap M may be removed and the metering pins J and J adjusted *by va screwdriver until the desired flow of gas is obtainedy through each of the ports H and I. The cap 'M may then be replaced. In the process of construction, the chamber F is formed in the nipple A before the ports H and lI and `by-pass G are .formed in the casing A. By referringto Figs. 8, 9, .10 andv 1-1 respectively, it will be noted that the chamber F is Lat the outer ends vof the ports H and I and byf-pass G, hence said ports H and I and by-pass G `may be formed by drilling the casing A from the base of the chamber F before the closure plate K and cap M are applied to said casing. Gas is always 'free to flow from the inlet passage D via the bypass G to the chamber F, and the metering pins J 'and J" carried by said closure plate K control .the -low of gas 'from said vchamber F to the port C `in the Valve B.
