Filed Aug. 15, 1945 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Jig- ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 7, 1948 use are ratherqcomplicated and require considl erable time to perform 4 the] reseating operation. Some types also require a series of units. to fit various sizes of valves. i
unis-therefore an object of my invention to provide a simple and inexpensive :valve reseating tool which can quickly and accurately perform the reseating operation. 4 i

4 :Referring more particularly to the drawings, the, reference numeral c2indicates the bOdy of a gateva1ve which has Jvalveseats l and} to be recut. mAnxaxial opening 8 extends from valve seat 4 to the outside ofthe valve body 2 and is provideduwith .theusual threads l0. PATENT ff T f 2,455,550 Y vatvE RESEA'lING Tool. I ee nnlacaeamlnd.
I Application August 13, 1945, Serial No. 610,609 "fs d ar (01.995125) 1 OFFICE the side oppositethe teeth I8, the cutter I5 is provided with a spherical seat 32. A feed screw 34 extends from the outside of valvebody! through the. opening l2 and is provided with a spherical end 36 which engages the spherical seat 32. The other end of the feed screw 34 is provided with a reduced square portion 38: for receiving a hand wheel 40 which is held in place by means of a screw 42 screwed intoa threaded opening 44 at the end of shaft 34. Surrounding the feed screw 34 is an inner bushing 46 which has an eccentric threaded opening 483 therethrough for receiving the feed screw 34. The bushing 46 is provided with flat portions 50.. for receiving a wrench or similar tool to' rotate the bushing... The outer end of bushing 46 is provided with slots 52 and 54 for a purpose which will appear later. The bushing 46 is threaded into the eccentric opening 56 of an outerbushing 58 which is threaded into the threaded open; ing I4 of valve body 2. The bushing 581s pro vided with a handle 59 to facilitate turning thereof. -A lock nut 60, having a handle; :62 is threaded onto the bushing 58 and a lock nut. 64 having a handle 66 is threaded onto the bushing 46. A choke nut 68, having a handle 10;: is
threaded on that .portionof the bushing 46 having slots 52 and 54 therein. 4 The operation of the device is as follows:
When it is desired to machine seat 4, the out ter l6 ispositioned on the valve seat and held in place by means of handle 30. Outer bushing 58 is screwed into the threads M with the lock nut in place. Inner bushing 45 with nuts 84 and 68 in place is screwed into bushing 58 and feed screw 34 is screwed into bushing. The valve seats 4 and 6 are at an angle tothe center line. of the valve stem and the axial center line 120i the valve, so that the cutter l6, when hearing on the seat 4, will be at the same angle. To function properly, the center of the cutter I6 should coincide with the center 14 of the seat 4; Since :the cutter l6 sits at an angle, its center line 16 will not coincide with the valve center the feed screw is seated in the spherical seat 32 of the cutterwith the common center of curvature 18 at the pointof intersection of the feed screw center line and the cutter center :line
16. When the cutter I6 is centered on the seat 4 as indicated by the point .14, it will be noted that the center line of the feed screw 34 is eccentric in relation to thevalve center. line 121 For the purpose of centering the cutter, it is necessary to provide means for adjusting the eccentricity 82 of the feed screw in relation to the valve center line 12. This is done by combining the relative rotations of the eccentric bushings 46 and 58. The bushing 58 is easily turned to its desired position by means of its handle 59 and bushing 46 is turned by means of a wrench engaging the flat portions 50. With the eccentricity 82 set as desired, the lock nut L60 is tightened against"housing '2 and lock nut 64 is tightened against bushing 58, thus locking the bushings in hand wheel 40 to maintain pressure of the cutter 1 I6 on the seat l. Slots E52 and 54 permitspringiness of the end of bushing '46 so that when the choke nut 68 is screwed onto the thread of the v 4 the center of curvature of the spherical seat being at the point of intersection of the feed screw center line and the cutter center line, a bushing having a threaded opening therein for receiving the feed screw, and means for supporting the bushing with the feed screw extending into the axial opening in the valve on the side remote from the seat being cut.
2. A tool forreseating .a gate valvewhich has a threadedraxial opening; extendingzfrom each valve seat to thebutside of the valve comprising a cutter, a rotatable shaft detachably connected to said cutter and extending through the opening :iendiorengagingthe spherical seat of the cutter bushing, it will grip the feed screw 34- and"prevent it from turning when it is exerting the desired-pressure on the cutterh-Theehandlefiii is :removed and the rotat'able shaft --22 inserted into'lthe socketfiii 'ofthe cutter l6 and the shaft 1 dis machined, itheurese'atingitool is removed and repositionedswith-ithe cutter l6 bearing against valve seat 6,Whic'h. is then machined'inthe same manner .asrdescribed above'forvalve seat 4.
iFigure 6 showsa modification of my invention foriuse in small' va'lves. This modification is' the sameras that shown in :Figure 1 except-thatonly one aeccentricbushingzis used to centerthe' cutter 16 on the seat 4 and a locknutBL'having a handle 8B,:is provided to prevent turning of feed-screw 34in'place of the slots 52 and 54 and choke nut 68. The feed screw "34 is received directly in'the eccentric :threaded opening 56 oi "bushing -'58 and the device sanduoperation"thereof L is otherwise the same: as the'firsttembodiment.
.Figure 17 shows 'athird embodiment'of the invention which is suitable for use with-a flange gate valve. In this embodiment the valve-body 2 is provided "with flanges '88 having openings'Qfl therethrcugh. .A flange 52, havin openings '9 spacediin :the same manner as ope gs 90; is fastened to sthe fiange afl by means of bolts and nuts 1% rp'assing through the openings 90 and 94.
The 'tfiange"92 has a threaded opening 98 theretlnoug'hifor receiving bushing 58. In 'other words, the'bushing 158,; instead or being threaded into the threaded openingrof the valve body 2, is'threade'd into the threaded opening '98. Otherwise; the device rand its operation" is the same as that disclosed iniEigure 1.
While'three embodiments of my invention have been-shown and described, it will be-apparentthat other adaptations andimodifications may be made without departing from the Escape 0f the following claims.
