Description

V. FORTIN CHIMNEY SCRAPER Nov. 30, 1948.
Filed Nov. 1, 1944 Patented Nov. 30, 1948 r Q' I'TED A S ,saci
TENT. orricE The present invention pertains to a novel device for scraping chimneys and particularly the corners thereof.
The principal object of the invention is to provide simple means for exerting lateral pressure on the scraping element and to regulate the tension of such means. Another object is to provide a novel guard adjacent to the scraper element to prevent it from becoming snagged in holes or recesses in the chimney.
In the accomplishment of these objects, the device includes a rod adapted to extend into the chimney and carrying a series of curved guard fingers which, in turn, carry a scraper blade clamp. The clamp consists preferably of a pair of plates bolted together against the scraper blade or blades.
The lateral pressure is obtained from a spring arm extending downwardly and laterally from the upper end of the rod. The arm engages the interior of the chimney under pressure and this exerts a lateral pressure on the scraper assembly. A yoke adjustable on the rod and straddling the arm regulates the pressure thereof as desired.
The invention is fully disclosed by way of example in the following description and in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device installed in a chimney;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the device;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figures 4 and 5 are plan views of different shapes of scraper blades;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a straight edge blade; and
Figure '7 is a plan View of a scraper clamp for a corner, with blades inserted therein.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
In Figures 1 and 2 the device is shown as comprising an elongated'rod I adapted to be inserted in a chimney The lower end of the rod carries a set of downwardly extending and diverging guard fingers 3, preferably three in number, for a purpose that will presently be described.
The lower ends of the fingers carry a clamp plate 4 which in this case is L-shaped for extending into a corner of the chimney. Other shapes may be used, as will presently be shown. A similar plate 5 is disposed beneath the plate 4 and secured thereto by suitable plate bolts 6.
Between the plates 4 and 5 are inserted two rectangular blades 1 arranged at a right angle 3. Claims. (01. 15-243) toeach'other so that their sharp edges 8 liealong the external angle of the plates, as shown in Figure '7. The blades are notched at 9 from the blunt edge so that they may be inserted between the plates 4, 5 by loosenin 'the bolts 6 but without removing them, after which the bolts are tight- 'ened.
The lower plate 5 carries a set of downwardly extending and converging fingers it positioned as continuations of the respective fingers 3. The fingers thus prevent the scraper from being snagged in a hole I I in the wall of the chimney, yet permit a limited penetration into the hole.
To the upper end of the rod l is fastened one end of a downwardly and outwardly extending spring arm l2. The free end of the arm is inserted in the chimney corner diagonally opposite that occupied by the scraper clamp and thus brings the scraper blades under pressure against that corner. The pressure of the spring arm is regulated by a yoke l3 straddling the arm near its upper end and fastened to a ring I islidable on the rod l and adjustably secured thereto by set screws Ill. The elevation of the yoke determines the pressure of the spring arm.
To the lower end of the arm is attached a chain l6 extending upwardly along the rod l through a pair of rings ll mounted on the rod. The upper end of the chain is pulled when it is desired to reduce the pressure of the spring arm l2, for example, in moving the device along the chimney.
For a round chimney, the semi-circular blade l8 shown in Figure 4 is used. Similarly, for an oval chimney, the semi-elliptical blade l9 shown in Figure 5 is employed. The clamp plates for these blades may be shaped correspondingly if desired. Each blade has notches 9' for the pur-- pose previously described.
It will now be seen that the invention provides a simple and inexpensive device that holds a scraper under pressure in the corners of a chimney, where cleaning is ordinarily most difficult.
Although specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described it will be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A chimney scraping device comprising a rod, a blade clamp at the lower end thereof, a blade held in said clamp, and a spring arm extending laterally from the upper end of said rod having one end rigidly secured to said rod, a yoke slidable on said rod and straddling said arm, and
means for securing saidyoke in adjusted positions on said rod. p
2. A chimney scraping device comprising a rod, a set of fingers diverging downwardly from the lower end of said rod and having their lower ends joined together, a blade carrier supported by said fingers, a blade mounted in said carrier and lying in a plane perpendicular to said rod, and a spring 7 arm extending downwardly from the upper end of said rod and laterally from the rod on a side thereof opposite the edge of said blade.
3. A chimney scraping device comprising a rod,
a set of fingers diverging downwardly from the lower end of said rod and having their lower ends joined together, a blade carrier supported by said fingers, a blade mounted in said carrier and lying in a plane perpendicular to said rod, a spring arm extending downwardly from the upper end of said rod and laterally from the rod on a side thereof opposite the edge of said blade, and a chain attached to the lower end of said arm and extending upwardly along said rod, said chain being slidably guided on said rod.
