.This invention relates to improvements in household or domestic cleaning accessories and, more specifically, to a new and improved hygienic dustpan.

Co'nv'ersant as I am with; the general state of the prior art to which the invention relates I am called upon to say, by way of introduction,

i that I am aware that portable dust collecting receptacles and containers have been perfected to I aid in cleaning floors, stairways and the like to collect dust, dirt and garbage. Then, too, I have ascertained that it is admittedly old in this line of endeavor to provide means whereby the pan can be used without the user bending over to place .the pan upon the floor, or remove it fromthe floor, by providing a pan with a long upright handle.

It goes without saying, therefore, that my primary aim is to generally improve upon these known structures by providing one which is structurally distinct and characterized by well directed and appreciable refinements and improvements assembled to permit the desired result to be more satisfactorily attained.

The hitherto known devices of this character have a dust pan or the like receptacle permanently attached to the handle, thus making it necessary to remove the dust and trash from time to time from said receptacle and to place it into another container, which is cumbersome and highly objectionable from a hygienic standpoint.

Therefore, the main object of the present invention is the provision of the device of the character described which consists of a framelike structure, that is strong and durable, to which a paper receptacle which is the dustpan is attached and when this receptacle is full of trash, the receptacle is detached from the frame and converted into a neat package ready for its disposal.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is light in weight, easy and convenient to handle, simple and inexpensive to manufacture, but which is sturdy and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this type are ordinarily subjected.

Further objects of the instant invention reside in any novel feature of construction or operation or novel combination of parts present in the embodiment of the invention described and shown in the accompanying drawing whether Within or without the scope of the appended claims and irrespective of other specific statements as to the scope of the invention contained herein.

In the drawing numeral I denotes the dustpan or garbage-pail per se, which consists of a receptacle of paper or of any other suitable, inexpensive material, and which has a fiat bottom 5, an upright rear wall 4 and upright side walls 6 which have stepped front portions, but which is open at its top and front. The main portions of the side walls 6 are of the same height as the rear wall 4, while the front portions are of a lesser height. The flat circular corner sections shown in Fig. 5 are cut off, or folded, or otherwise eliminated when the blank of Fig. 5 is folded so as to form the receptacle I. This receptacle, which is made of a flat piece of material that is provided with folding lines Ii, i2, I3 and I4 and with apertures l5 as shown by the development of Fig. 5, is detachably secured to a frame-like structure comprising a pair of flat plates 3 which are rectangularly secured to the extremities of a horizontal cross-bar 2. A longitudinal upright handle i0, whose upper end can be provided with an eyelet (not shown) for suspending the device from a hook when not in use in a well known manner, is pivotally secured to the center portion of the cross-bar 2, so that it can be pivoted relative to the parts 2 and 3 as indicated in Figure 3 in dashand-dotted lines.

A plurality of pins 9 are extended from the inher sides of the plates 3, and the front portions of the plates 3 are stepped and have longitudinally pointed lower parts 3' as may be seen in Figs. 3 and 4. Thus the plates 3 are stepped and pointed. The receptacle I can be attached to the plates 3 in various manners. Preferably this is done in the manner shown in the drawing, where it will be seen that the major portions of the side Walls 6 are extended over the outer sides of the plates 3, while the portions 7 are folded inwardly along vertical folding lines and are extended partially over the inner sides of the plates 3. For the purpose of reinforcement I prefer to fold the most extreme side Wall portions 8 outwardly (Figs.

2 and 4) and to pierce these portions 8 as well as the adjoining portions 1 by the pins 9. In this way the receptacle I can be easily and safely attached to the plates 3, so that it will serve as a dustpan or garbage pail in substantially the same manner as permanently attached pans or the like.

Since certain changes may be made in the above articles and different embodiments of the invention could be made Without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Pa'tent is:

1. A device of the character described comprising an upright handle, a cross bar to which the lower extremity of said handle is pivotally secured, a pair of flat members having stepped front portions whose lower part is pointed and being at right angles to and attached on the extremities of said cross bar, pins extended from the inner side of each of said flat members, and

an open receptacle havin a bottom, a rear wall and side walls being detachably secured to said flat members and being fastened thereon by 'me'ans'of said pins which extend through inwardly folded portions of said side walls, all substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described comprising an upright handle, a cross bar to which the lower extremity of said handle is pivotally secured, a pair of flat members having stepped front portions whose lower part is pointed and being at right angles to and attached on the extremities of said. cross bar, pins extended from the inner side of each 'of said flat members, and an open receptacle having a bottom, a rear wall and side walls some portions of which extend over the outer sides of said flat members while other portions of said side walls are folded inwardly along vertical folding lines and are partially extended over the inner sides of said flat members and pierced by said pins, all substantially as described.
