soREwjAND 'rbGrmsrn-D vv-ItENc-ni invention relates -toa combination;` wrench andtoiamp; which can be lemployed for use -as'plers; ratchet wrench or-pipe'w-reneh.' object of the? invention'. is to provide a devioe-y `liar/ving al-stationary: j aw and --a movable jaw and( nieanslfor' moving-1 the" movable vjaw. relative to the stationary jaw.
Anotherobjeot'of the invention is to provide a device which is efficient in operation, simple in construction inexpensive-Ato manufacture.
`Withitheseand .othen obj ectsand .advantages in view, the invention consists ofthe novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts morev fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,-
Figure-.Lais a view inside-elevation ofl an embodimentrof the invention;
V.Figure 2. is a longitudinal'section thereof with the movable jaw in locked position;
Figure 3 is the same with the movable jaw in position to be moved longitudinally of the body;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a side view of the clutch member;
Figure 6 is a bottom view thereof;
Figure '7 is a side View of one type of jaw face;
Figure 8 is a sectional view thereof;
Figure 9 is a side View of another form of jaw face, and
Figure 10 is a sectional View thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 20 designates th'e shank of the wrench which is U-shaped in cross section and is provided with opposed apertured stationary jaw receiving portions 22. The jaw receiving portions 22 are formed at right angles to the shank at the forward end thereof and are adapted to receive the stationary jaw 24 therein. The jaw 24 being retained in position in the portions 22 by rivets 26.
Mounted in the shank 20 is the rotatable adjusting and locking -screw 28. One end of the screw 28 is enlarged at 38 which is seated in a bearing socket 32 provided in the jaw 24. Upon the other end of the screw 28 is mounted a knob 3l and a bearing .socket 33 mounted in the shank 28 and secured thereon by rivets 35 seats this end of the screw 28. The knob 3l extends beyond the outer end of th'e socket 33 for the easy manipulation thereof.
A U-shaped member 34 which is slidably mounted on the shank 20, comprises the bottom portion 36 and side portions 38. An upstanding apertured ear 48 is formed on each side portion at one end thereof and inwardly turned and overlyi 2 ingapertured'earsAZ on the opposite ends ofthe side: portions.. The, aperturedlY grip orl locking member 44 issecuredto. theoverlapping ears 4-2 bymeans-of the rivetlli.` y
The movable .jaw` comprisesthe side. portions,V 48 andthe intermediate jaw portion 58" which are securedA together by rivets 51; The movable jaw is pivotedN at its inn'er end" to the ears' 480i the member 34 by means of a pivot' bolt 5'4 The pivot` bolt' 54 extends through thel ears 48 and the-jaw-portionfiland a: nut 56'1on4theend thereof retains theboltfin position;
The stationary andi movable' jaw portions'24 and 50 are provided with removable teethlmemi.- bers.`v 52 which: are retained in positiont oneach jawf'by'alpin 53;, The'pin-Six4 is xedin the'jaw portionsf24 and 58=.-andextends throughtheaper'- tured. enda 54fof.feaeh1 plate 56. A serrated `portion 58 is secured by means ofirivetst 68 to each plate 56,. asr` shown inay Figures- 9 andv 10. A `nut 62 on each pin 53 retains each of the plates in position on each jaw portion. One end of the plate 56 on the jaw portion 50 is curved at 64 to fit the jaw portion 50 while the end on the jaw portion 24 remains straight as shown.
The hand lever 66 is pivotally connected to the movable jaw by one of the rivets 5l which' acts as a pivot pin therefor. Between the portions 48 of the movable jaw, the portion 50 has a curved recess 68 in the forward end thereof to permit movement of the lever 66.
The hand lever 66 is pivotally supported adjacent its forward pivoted end between a pair of curved arms 12 by a pivot pin 10. The arms 12 extend laterally from the shank 28 and are pivotally connected to the clutch member 14, which is slidably mounted in the shank 28, by means of pivot pin 16.
The clutch member 14 comprises a block member 18 which is apertured at each end transversely thereof to receive the pin 16 and one of the rivets 5l whereby said member is pivotally connected to the movable jaw. The end of the member 18 is recessed at 80 at the end pivoted to the movable jaw to compensate for the curved end 64 of the teeth securing plate 56.
Welded to the member 18 is the plate 8| having screw threads 82 which `co-act with the screw 28 for adjustment thereof.
The forward end of the plate is pointed and inclined at 84 and is positioned rearwardly of the forward end of the member 18. The rear end 86 of the plate 8l extends beyond the rear end of the member 18 and is provided with the upstanding pin 88 which is received in the apertured ears 42 and grip d4. The pin ss extending upwardly through the ears 42 and grip 44 is adapted to be contacted by the hand lever 66.- Therefore, when the lever 66 is in the position shown in Figure 2, the pin 88 is forced downward thereby forcing the plate 80 into full contact with the screw 28.
A spring 89 fastened to a pin 90 carried by the arms 'l2 and an apertured pin 92 fixed to the hand lever 66 aids in forcing the lever into the positionv shown in Figure 3 when it is released from operative position.
In Figures '1 and a, the pnt@ 5s has a face 94- f secured thereto by rivets 96.` The face 94 is adapted for use with highly polished or easily damaged articles, since it comprises a covering 96 and an intermediate pad 98. :remainder of the plate formation Ais the same as previously described.
However the 4 claimed as' new and desired to be secured by Lt'- ters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, com= prising a shank which is U-shaped in cross-section having opposed jaw receiving portions,- fixed jaw secured intermediate of and to said J'aw portions, a member slidably mounted on said shank, a movable jaw pivoted to said member, a hand lever pivoted at one end to said movable jaw, supporting arms intermediate the sides of said slidable member, means carried by said arms for pivotally supporting said hand lever intermediately of said arms, a screw mounted in said shank and clutch means pivotally mounted on said supporting arms adapted to co-act with said screw to lock said movable jaw in rlixed position with relation to said xed jaw said clutch means In the use of the wrench, the lever is moved :outwardly until the clutch member is disengaged rfrom the screw,v then the movable jaw can be moved to grip the article desired for retention -:between the jaws by depressing the lever. Thus the movable jaw is locked in position for use. SSlight pressure on the lever will permit the clutch .member to be adjusted by the knob on the end of 'the screw, but full pressure will securely lock the movable jaw in position.'` 4
It is believed that the operation and construcdion of the wrenchwill be apparent to those :skilled in the art and that a device has been i provided-that will accomplish the objects of the invention. y .l
It is to be understood that changes and modi# fica-tions in the various parts and combinations thereof may be resorted to without fallingbeyond the spirit of the inventionor the scope lof the appended claims. l
Having thus described the invention, what is comprising a block member pivoted at one end to said movable jaw and at the other end to said supporting arms and a plate member secured to thev undersurface of said block member having screw threads therein to coact with said screw.
2. The invention as in claim 1, said movable jaw comprising side portions having the jaw portion positioned intermediate thereof and means for holding said portions in assembled relation to each other.
HENRY ALPERS.
