CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,215,.dated August 2, 1881,
Application filed April 9, 1881, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. RAYMOND, of Ripon, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, showing two draw-heads in position ready for coupling. Fig. 3 is a front view.

This invention relates to car-couplin gs 5 and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the draw-head, which is provided with a vertical longitudinal slot, B, extending from the front end or face toward the rear end of the draw-head. The face 0 is provided with a horizontal transverse groove, D, crossing the slot B at right angles, as shown.
E is a double or arrow-headed hook, pivoted in the slot'B of the draw-head, so as to move in avertical plane, the head F of said hook projecting beyond the face of the draw-head, so as to engage the corresponding hook of the opposite coupling. A suitable spring, G, arranged in the slot B above the couplinghook, forces the latter in a downward direction to its proper position, and serves to prevent it from being accidentally disengaged from the adjoining coupling. Asuitable buffer-spring, H, is arranged in any convenient manner at the rear end of the draw-head, which may be slotted for the reception of said spring.
To hold the couplinghook in a horizontal position ready for engagement with the coupling of the adjoining car, Iemploy an ordinary coupling-link, l, which is adjusted in the transverse groove D in the face of the drawhead, as shown, thus supporting the outer end of the coupling-hook, which is forced in a downward direction upon the link I by its own weight and by the spring G. To retain the link I in this position pins J, resembling ordinary coupling-pins, are employed, said pins being adjusted in vertical perforations K in the lugs L formed at the front end of the draw-head by the intersection of the slot B and groove D.
The operation of myinvention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection-with the drawings hereto annexed. When the cars come together one of the coupling-hooks passes over and engages the hook of the adjoiningcar, thus completing the coupling. To uncouple, any suitable arrangement of levers may be used, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When a car having my improved coupling is to be coupled to one having theold-fashioned pin and link,the link I may be disengaged from one of the pins J, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and employed for the purpose of the coupling, while the couplinghook E, being thus deprived of its support, drops down below the level of the draw-head, so as to be out of the way.
' Having thus described my in vention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in car-couplings, the draw-head A, having vertical slot B, transverse groove D, coupling-hook E, and spring G, in combination with the link I and pins J, said link being arranged removably in groove D to form a temporary support for the coupling-hook, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
