Description
Oct. 19, 1948- c. R. GARLAND PISTON PIN HOLDER ATTACK-{ABLE T0 CONVENTIONAL VISE JAWS Filed June 16, 1947 20 0? gINVENTOR.
I v A T TORNE y.
Patented Oct. 19, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT orifice PISTON PIN HOLDER ATTACHABLE TO CONVENTIONAL VISE JAWS 2 Claims.
My invention relates to 'a piston holder, and an important object of the inventiomis to provide such a holder that will engage the wrist pin thereof without scoring the piston, the associated connecting rod, or the bearings.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a holder that will function without the use of threads or bolts.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such a holder that will support a wrist, pin in the desired position but permit the piston and connecting rodto be free for manipulation.
My invention also has for its objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, easily installed in a working position and easily disconnected therefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple and of general superiority and. serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Fig. l is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention, shown in its operative surrounding.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an element of said embodiment.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a modified construction.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the modification shown in Fig. 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numbers I and 8 indicate jaws of a conventional vise. The movable jaw 8 is actuated toward and from the fixed jaw 1 by screw means 9 that is turned by a customary lever handle I0. The fixed jaw 1 has suitable mountings l2 for fastening same in position.
Angular plate elements l3 and M, respectively, rest on the jaws l and B. Each plate element comprises face members I5 and I6. The face members I5 lie on top of the vise jaws, as illustratecl, with the other face members [6 depending therefrom in the space between thejaws of the vise. Each depending face member I6 carries a projecting portion II that has a tapering end [-8 and a shoulder Ha therebetween.
member I 6, as best shown in Fig. 3.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a series of progressively reduced, cylindrical portions [9 and shoulders l9a terminate in a tapering end 20. The body member 2! of this form has a neck 22 for connecting with the depending face member l8 of one of the angular plates, the same as the neck 23 on the projecting'member I! is fastened in 'a suitable opening'in the face In the use of my present invention, the angular elements are placed upon the vise jaws, as explained and as shown in Fig. 1, with the projecting members substantially aligned and pointing towards each other. A piston 24 is then swingingly mounted on the "projecting elements with the cylindrical portions l1 within openings 25 of the wall Of the piston 24, and with the tapering portion [8 engaging the central aperture 26 of the wrist pin 21, as shown in Fig. 3. The vise is, of course, operated to effect engaging action of the projecting elements with the piston openings. The shoulders Ila definitely limit inward movement of the projecting portions H by abutment with the ends of the wrist pins 21, in case the greatest outside diameter of the tapering portion I8 is no greater than the inside diameter of the wrist pin 21.
So held, the piston is free to rotate without scoring it or the connecting rod. The operator may then turn the piston to the desired position so that the connecting rod 28 may be removed and the bearings 29 repaired or replaced. In fact, any repair or replacement may be made that is desired. My present tool conveniently locates all parts for such work.
The modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is similarly used, except that it has a series of cylindrical portions Hi to fit different sized openings in pistons, and different sizes of shoulders I9a to limit movements of the projecting portions inwardly of pistons. The body 2! also has a way 30 along which a key or set screw may be withdrawn from a wrist pin.
In either form, a lock 35 on the connecting rod may be freed whereby it may be moved along the wrist pin.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications 3 that may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. Piston mounting means comprising similar members adapted to be mounted on the jaws of a vice, each member comprising an element having a horizontally disposed plate for engagement with the top of a vise jaw and an integral vertically disposed plate for engagement with the clamping face of said vise jaw, the latter plate of each element having a hole therethrough, a cylindrical element having a reduced neck shorter than the thickness of the vertical plates and positioned in the hole of each plate, each cylindrical element having a cylindrical bod extending from the respective vertical plate, and a reduced conical end projecting from the cylindrical body and defining an annular shoulder therebetween, said conical ends, in operative position being opposed for end engagement with the wrist pin of a piston.
2. Piston mounting means comprising similar members adapted to be mounted on the jaws of a vise, each member comprising an element having a horizontally disposed plate for engagement with the top of a vise jaw and an integral vertically disposed plate for engagement with the clamping face of said vise jaw, the latter plate reduced cylindrical parts and conical ends, in
operative position, being opposed for end engagement with the wrist pin of a piston.
