This invention relates to match packages, and the like, and has for one of its objects the production of a novel type of package or match book which will stimulate the curiosity of an observer and provide an eflicient advertising means.

A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient match package, which will constitute an efficient advertising medium in restaurants, and the like, and which will be so novel and attractive as to cause a patron to pick up the match package and take it home as a souvenir.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear throughout the following specificat-ion and claims.

Figure 1 is a front view of the match package;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view, certain parts being shown in section;

Figure 3 is a top plan view;

Figure 4 is a front elevational view of the front flap or cover section of the package illustratin the positions of the various match-receiving apertures.

By referring to the drawing it will be seen that Ill designates the front flap or cover section of the match package which is adapted to be folded over in front of the back wall or section II of the package in the conventional manner, as shown in Figure 2. A comb-like strip of matches I'3 of the conventional type is carried between the upturned flap or lip [4 of the back wall H in the conventional manner, and the lower edge '15 of the front flap I is adapted to be fitted behind this lip l4 when the package is closed, or as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 when desired.

The front flap or cover section Ill is preferably provided with a pictorial illustration of a figure l6 having apertures I1 and I1 located at the junction of the arms and legs, or the legs alone, with the body of the figure as shown in Figure 1. It is not desired, however, to limit the invention to the type of figure shown, for any type of figure may be substituted for the one illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is necessary that the apertures I] and ll be located at a point adjoining the body l6 of the figure to give the desired pictorial effect illustrated in the drawing.

Certain match stems l8 of the match strip l3 are preferably bent substantially at right-angles to the strip I3. The outer heads l9 thereof are inserted through the apertures ll of the front flap Ill in diverging relation with respect to one another in the manner shown, to protrude beyond the front flap Ill and to simulate arms and hands of the figure It. The arms l8 by extending through the apertures H in diverging relation will tend to limit the outward swing of the cover section Ill relative to the back wall or section I I even though the lower edge l5 of the cover section [0 should become disengaged from the lip M. This function is obvious when considering Figures 1 and 2.

Certain other match stems 20 and 2| are preferably bent substantially at right-angles to the strip I3 and are selectively extended through the apertures Il The outer extremity 20 of the match stem 20 is preferably bent downwardly to simulate a leg bent at the knee joint. The outer extremity Zi of the match stem 2] 'is also preferably bent downwardly and is extended across the extremity 28 of the stem 26 in cross-leg fashion to simulate crossing of legs. The outer heads 22 of the stems 20 and 2| simulate feet. The position of the stems '28 and 2|, and the extremities 2!! and ll will also assist in preventing the cover section Ill from swinging to a wide open position and will therefore assist in limiting the outward swing of the cover section [0 relative to the back wall section H, thereby maintaining the pictorial display without distortion.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very attractive and entertaining novelty has been produced, and it should be understood that the match stems may be bent in any suitable manner, to simulate different portions of the limbs of the figure depicted upon the front flap Ill, and that any suitable number of match stems may be used for a series of figures depicted upon the front flap [0, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having described the invention what is claimed is:

1. An article of manufacture of the class described comprising a match strip consisting of a plurality of match stems carried by a match book having a flap, said flap having a pictorial display of a figure upon one face thereof, said flap having apertures formed therein at selected locations relative to the pictorial illustration, and said match stems being extended through the apertures in diverging relation with their match heads protruding outwardly to complete the pictorial illustration on the flap to simulate limbs of said figure and to limit the outward swing of the flap relative to the book.

2. An article of manufacture of the class described comprising a match strip consisting of a plurality of match stems carried by a match book having a flap, said flap having a pictorial display of a figure upon one face thereof, said flap having apertures formed therein at selected locations relative to the pictorial illustration, some of said match stems being extended through the apertures in diverging relation with their match heads protruding outwardly to complete the pictorial illustration on the flap to simulate arms of said figure, and others of said stems being bent downwardly and laterally to simulate legs of the figure, the position of the match stems relative to the flap providing means to limit the outward swing of the flap relative to the match book.
