3 Claims. (Cl. 30--330) This invention relates to razor blade holders for use in stropping or sharpening therazor blade, and an object of the invention is to provide a blade holder with .a stationary blade-engaging element or jaw and a movable coacting blade-engaging element or jaw, in which novel means are provided for opening and closing the movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw and for clamping therebetween ra razor blade to be stropped or honed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bearing or tubular element having means to which the stationary jaw is attached and held, the said tubular element also acting as a bearing for an operating rod or shaft, having novel means of connection to the movable jaw.
It is furthermore an object to provide a tubular handle for the stropping device, in which means for operating the movable jaw is partially rotatable, and in which the operating means is accessible at the end of the handle, a condition which permits the free use of the handle during the sharpening operation without liability of the release of the blade by the jaws; it being furthermore the purpose of the inventor to have a threaded engagement between-,the inner wall of the handle and a member therein carrying the rod or shaft, so that Joy the frictional engagement of these threaded connections, release of the blade is prevented.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein .like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a top plan view of a razor blade holder embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 illustrates .a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 illustrates `a partial, sectional view on the line 4--4 of Figure 2, the handle being in elevation;
Figure 5 illustrates an end View showing in dotted lines the movable jaw in open position; and
Figure 6 illustrates a sectional view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 5 and 6 denote a stationary and a movable jaw of any desired size and coniguration. The jaw 6 is provided with spaced tubular bearings 1, while the jaw 5 is provided with a single tubular bearing 8 adapted to be positioned intermediate the bearings I1. A handle 9 has a reduced tubular sleeve portion III, which portion I0 extends between the bearings 'I and 8 when in assembled position, as shown in Figure 3. It will be noted that while the sleeve I0 engages both sets of bearings 1 and 8, it does not extend the full length of the outermost bearing 1.
In order to form the stationary jaw 5, the bearing 8 of this jaw is welded to the tubular extension I0, whereby jaw 5 becomes a part of the extension III.
A rod II, of a diameter to rotatably nt within the handle portion 9 and bearings 1, 8, is positioned within the handle portion 9 and bearings 1, 8 and projects slightly beyond the outermost bearing 1, as is clearly apparent in Figures 2 and 3. An opening is provided in this end of the rod to receive a, leverage pin I2 therethrough, which leverage pin is flush with the outermost bearing 1 of the jaw 6 and extends at right angles to the rod II substantially to the height of jaw Il, or it may be midway of the jaw height. In this position the pin I2 is welded to the jaw 6 and to the rod I I to become the movable jaw of the assembly.
The opposite end of thephandle 9 has a reduced threaded portion I3 which is engaged with an interiorly threaded extension handle member I4. The rod II projects into the threaded extension I4 and is provided with a threaded end I5 which is anchored in a stem I6 that is externally threaded to engage the threads of the extension handle I4. A knurled knob II on the end of the stem I8 externally of the extension I4 is grasped by the operator for manipulating the rod II and rotating it, as will presently appear. In order to secure the jaws in closed position, a threaded lock nut I8 is provided to engage the threaded portion I3 and bearing against extension handle I4.
As thus comprised, the nut I8 is rotated away from handle I4, whereupon the operator manipulates the knob I I which, through the rod II and the welded connections of the pin I2 thereto and to the jaw 6, rotates the jaw into the open position shown in Figure 5 in dotted lines. After a blade has been inserted between the jaws, the reverse operation mentioned above tak-es place to close the jaws and the nut I8 is rotated into engagement with extension handle I4, the threaded connections serving to hold the parts adjusted.
I claim:
1. A razor blade holder comprising two cooperating jaws for holding a blade therebetween, one of said jaws having spaced tubular bearings and the other jaw having an intermediate tubular bearing fitting between the spaced bearings, a handle having a tubular sleeve within said .bearings, mea-ns connecting the intermediate bearing to said sleeve, a rod rotatably extending through said-iasleevaam bearings, means con-v necting said rod to One'of said' spacedbearings, means on said handle to rotate said rod and open 'said jaw having spaced bearings, and means to secure said jaws in closed position.
2. A razor blade holder comprising two cooperating blades having tubular bearing portions, a handle having a reduced sleeve portion extending within the bearing portions, one of said bearings and its jaw being secured to said sleeve portion, a rod rotatably received within said handle portion,` sleeve. and bearings and extending. beyoud. the youtermost bearing, saidf rod having an openingrinthe projecting portionV therecf,a pin positionedin saidopening at right angles to' said rod,v means connecting said pin to sai-dstemand to.:the.fotl'ierof said'bearings and ljaw, means carriedby said handle to rotate said rod and Iits connected a aw to open -position ,f and means to. threadedly-seoure-saidjawsin-closedposition.
