f 1 f Y. This invention relates to a closure-control element for catsup bottles. k l
It is an object of the present invention to provide a closure-control element with means utiliningT the formation of the bottle top for maintaining Vthe closure element guided upon the top rand retained thereon against vertical displace-V ment when in its closed position. Y
1t is another object of the invention to provide an operating lever arrangement for the closure element which can beY adjusted vertically along its support to adapt the cap land the attachment to different shaped bottles.
According to the invention, there is a ,main
support adapted to be clamped about the bottle..
A slidable cap is adapted to be slid over the top opening of the bottle. This cap has depending members adapted" to be guided by the annular recesses formed in the top of the bottle. The
lever connected to the cap is mounted on a car-` rier which is in turn adjustable on the main support clamped to the bottle so that the cap can be adapted and made to fit properly different bottles with which the attachment is used.

Referring now to the figures, a .bottle I0 is adapted to contain an attachment II embodying the features of the present invention. The bottle I0 has the usual annular recess I2 below the usual annular cap bead I3 which surrounds the bottle opening. The main support I4 is adapt- Y5 Claims. (Cl. 215-64) ed to be clamped tothe bottle below'such recess and. bead. Such support has verticallyspaced-pairs of oppositely-extending bowed arms I5 vand I6.V The arms I5 and I6 are of different lengths and extend from a vvertically-extending portion II having parallel slots I8 formed therein on opposite sides of a longitudinally and vertically-extending `series of small recesses I9 which are formed'in the outer surface ofv such portion, Figure-4. Spaced projections 2I and 22 of a lever carrier 23 extend into the slots I8. Such projections are bent inwardly to maintain the carrier upon the portion'I'I. Af lever 24 is pivotally connected to the carrier by a pin25. A springY 25 normally keeps the lever 24 pivoted inwardly. The lever 24 has a handle portion 2'I adapted to be pressed'inwardly by the thumbv to a positionY shown in dotted lines Figure '1. The carrier 23 has a projection 29 on its upper edge in alignment with'the recesses I9 and is adapt- Yed tosbev seated in a selected one of vsuch recesses to. retain thecarrier in a selected adjusted poy sition on the portion IVI.
The upper end of the upper lever arm28 carries a capSI adapted to be extended over the cap headV I3 of the bottle II). .This capmay have a gasket 32 so as to cause the cap to make an airtight connection with the bottle.. In order to insure that this air-tight connection be maintained, there is depended downwardly-from the sides of thecap strips 33 having horizontally extending portions il!v adapted to be guided in opposite portions of the annular recess I 2 Ibelow the cap bead `I3. These guided portions willv positively retain the cap upon the top and against'verticalY displacement therefrom. l
In order that the cap will not be extended beyond its properly centered position, there is provided a depending lug 39 serving as a stop and adapted to abut the cap head I3 when the cap is properly positioned thereon.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction, it shall be-understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1.1In a closure attachment for a bottle including a main support adapted to be clamped to the bottle with a portion of said support extending longitudinally of said bottle, a lever carrier supported upon said portion for longitudinal adjustment thereon, means for maintaining the carrier upon said portion in its adjusted position, a lever on the carrier Vextending longitudinally upwardly thereof, and a cap carried on the end of the lever adapted as the lever is operated to slide to and iro over the top of the bottle; the improvement comprising at least one guide slot formed in said portion and extending longitudinally thereof, said carrier having portions extending into said slot and mounting said carrier on said portion for longitudinal sliding movement,l a longitudinally-disposed series of recesses formed in saidpportionadjacent toand parallel to said slot, a projection on said carrier, said projection being adapted to be seated in-a selected one of said recesses whereby to lock said carrier in a selected longitudinally-adjusted position relative to said support.
2. In a closure attachment for a bottle including a main support yadapted (to `loeclampedto the |bottle with a portion of said support ,extending longitudinally of said bottle, a lever carrier adjustably supported on said portion for longitu- 'dinali adjustment thereon, means for maintaining 'the' carrier uponsaid portion` inits adjusted po- Asitior1,;a lever onthe carrier extending longitudinally upwardly thereof, and a cap .carried on the ,end-of'Ltheilever.andadapted as the lever is op- ,erated toslideto and fro over` the topV of the bottle; the ,improvement Vcomprising a longitudinally-disposed series'of recesses formed on said portion, a projection on said carrien'said projec- 'tion being adapted to'be seated in a selectedone of said recesses whereby to lock said carrier in a selected' longitudinally-adjusted-'position relative to said support.

5. In a closure for a bottle or the like, including a support having means for detachably connecting the same to said bottle with a portion thereof extending longitudinally of the bottle, a
,cap for the bottle, :means for moving said cap to and from open and shut positions relative to said bottle, and carrier means adjustably mounting said last-named means on said support; the improvement comprising a pair of laterally-spaced guide slots formed in said `portion and extending longitudinally thereof, said carrier means coinprisingia pair of laterally-spaced inwardlyfdirected projections extending into said slots, means for retaining said projections in said slots to slidably mount said carrier means on saidportion, means mounting said second-namedmeans on said carrier means for `longitudinal sliding movement relative thereto, a longitudinally-disposed series of recesses 'formed in said portion intermediate said slots andlparallel thereto, a projection on said carrier, said projection Abeing adapted to be seated in a selected one of said recesses whereby to lock said carrier in a selected longitudinally-adjustedy position lrelative to said support.
