1 claim. 1
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient combination check book and check protector, as a substitute for a standard check protecting machine.
The specific object of my invention is to provide a check book cover, or backing, with a burred plate and matrix in foldable relations, whereby the surface of a check is mutilated or burred to prevent the amount of the same from being raised. It is understood that the protector is to be Icombined with any type of check book having hinged covers or of the foldable variety.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, cornbination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly dened by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a face view of an open standard check book provided with a check protector, embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating the check book in its closed position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a check mutilated ou' burred upon its face, in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 5 is a face view of a foldable pocket check book with a wing extension, 4embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 6 is an end elevation `of the same, and
Fig. '7 is a similar end elevation showing the pocket check book folded.
Referring by characters to the drawings, Figures l to 3 inclusive, I indicates a foldable backing and l' the companion backing or cover for a group of checks 2, which checks and backings are hingedly connected by rings 3.
The backing l has a foldable wing 4, which wing has secured thereto a burred plate 5, the burrs being of any suitable design having cutting faces. Interrupting the backing I and wing 4 is a depression or groove 4', which groove, in effect, forms a hinge, whereby the wing 4 may be folded, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When so folded, the plate 5 is aligned or registered with a matrix 6, the same being secured, in any suitable manner, to the backing I The matrix may be of pliable material, whereby the bur-red plate will be imbedded therein to effectually emboss the face of a check A, as indicated in Figures 2 and 4.
When not in use, the check book is closed, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in which case the wing is folded inwardly.
Referring now to Figures 5 to 7 inclusive, the backing cover l' is formed from any exible material, such as leather or the like, and said backing cover is creased along the dotted linev indicated at x of Fig. 5.
This cover is longitudinally positioned, with reference to a group of checks 2' mounted thereon, and said cover has a flap extension 'l provided with a suitable grommet fastening 1', the companion member 1" of which is indicated in dotted lines at the opposite end of said cover.
The cover I', in this exempliflcation of my invention, is provided with an upwardly extended wing 4, secured to which wing is a two part burred plate 6 having a space therebetween upon opposite sides of the creasing line r.
Secured, in any suitable manner, to the wing 4" is a flap 8, which flap has secured thereto a two part burred plate 5', corresponding in position with the interrupted matrix plate 5.
Hence, as best indicated in Figure 6 of the drawings, the matrix and burred plate form an effective pair of jaws for the reception of a check therebetween when it is desired to mutilate or burr the face of the check.
When this foldable check book is not in use, as indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 6, the wing extension is folded downwardly upon the group of checks, and thereafter the checks and backing or cover l is folded upon the dotted line a', to thus nest the parts in compact form and thereafter, as indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the flap 1 is folded over and locked by the male and female grommets in the usual manner.
It is emphasized that the winged foldable backing cover not only forms a cover for the check book, but it is provided with two companion surfaces between which a folding groove is formed, whereby said surfaces comprising a burred plate and a matrix may be folded over a check to mark the same. Hence, the cover serves not only the purpose of a cover but also serves the purpose of a check protector, and when folded over the checks, it is practically only the thickness of two thin sheets.
While I have indicated a matrix as a separate strip attached to the backing of a check book, obviously the backing may be formed with a REFERENCES CITED matrix face thereon for a bed upon which to press The fOllOWing references are of record in the the burred plate in a check protector operation, le 0f this patent!
