INVENTOR WITNESSES m/waw/ ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. LEAOH, OF STVOLAIB, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND OROGKET MCELROY, OF SAME PLACE.
PORTABLE STEAM-AUGER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent 1\To. 244,629, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed May 11, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANCIS LEAOH, of St. Clair, in the county of StfOlair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Steam- Augers, of which the followingis a specification.
Figure l is a plan View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional rear elevation of the same, taken through the line mm, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the boring and drilling of wood and metal.
The invention consists in constructing a portable steam-auger with a rotary steam-engine to operate the boring-tool, handles for carrying and holding the engine, a breastplate for forcing the boring-tool forward to its work, and a tool holder or couplingfor connecting a boring-tool with the engine, as set forth.
A represents the shell of a rotary steam-engine, which is made small and light, so thatit can be conveniently carried.
In an aperture in the upper side of the shell A is secured a short pipe, B, to receive a flexible pipe or hose, through which steam is introduced into the engine, and which is designed to be provided with a valve for co trolling the admission of steam.
In an aperture in the lower side of the shell A is secured a short pipe, 0, to receive aflexible pipe or hose, through which the exhauststeam escapes.
Within the shell A are placed revolving pistons or wheels D, which are revolved by the inflowing steam, and about the construction of which there is nothing new.
To the projecting forward end of the journals orshafts of the rotary-pistons D are attached two gear-wheels, E, the teeth of which mesh into each other, so that the rotary'pistons D will be compelled to revolve with the 5 same velocity.
' To the upper and lower sides of the shell A are attached cross-bars F, the ends of which project at the sides of the shell A, and have rounds .G attached to them. The crossbars F and rounds G form handles, by which the machine can be conveniently carried and held while being used.
H is the breastplate for the body of the operator to restagainst when using the auger to 5 force it forward into the timber or metal being bored or drilled. The breastplate H is provided with arms I, which project forward and are attached to the cross-bars F. e
To the forward journal of one of the rotary 6o pistons D is attached a coupling, J, to receive an auger when the machine is to be used for boring wood, and to receive a drill when the machine is tobe used for boring metal. The shank of the borin g-tool is secured in the coup 6 ling or holder J by a set-screw, K, or other suitable means.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The combination, with asteam-engine, AB C D, havingthe coupling J K, of the cross-bars F, rounds G, and breastplate having arms I, to form a portable engine which may be held to the breast while the auger is operated by steam, as described.
WILLIAM FRANCIS LEAOH.- Witnesses:
