MACHINE FOR CHAMFERING BARREL-HEADS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 24,458, dated June21, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN GREENWOOD, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Cutting Barrel- Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line w, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in placing rotating clamps in which the stuff is secured, in a sliding frame, and using in connection therewith a cam and rotating dish-shaped saw and cutters, the whole being arranged to operate as hereinafter shown, whereby the manipulation of the machine is rendered extremely easy and the desired work very expeditiously performed.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular framing which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts.
B, is a frame which is fitted by means of guides in the upper part of the framing A, and allowed to move freely back and forth thereon. In the frame B, two rotating clamps C, D, are placed. These clamps are circular disks, one of which C, is attached to an independent shaft a, the other D, being attached to a shaft Z), which has a bevel toothed wheel E, placed on it.A The outer end of shaft Z), is connected with a slide c, which has a cam F, attached, said cam being formed of a lever d, with a curved slot c, made in it, as shown plainly in Fig. 2, a pin e', in slide c, fitting in the slot c, of cam F.
To the side of the framing A, and near the cam F, a lever G, is attached, and to the under side of the frame B, a horizontal bar H, is secured, said bar being in line with the lever G. On the upper part'of the framing A, a lever I, is placed, f, being its fulcrum pin. This lever is connected by a link g, with the sliding frame B. In the framing A, a vertical shaft J, is placed,
said shaft having a'bevel pinion, 7L, on its upper end.. On the lower part of the shaft J,
a toothed wheel K, is placed, and into this wheel K, a screw L, gears, said screw being on a horizontal driving shaft M, `in the lower part of the framing. On the shaft M, a. pulley N, is placed, said pulley having a band passing around it, which band also passes around a shaft P, on the framing, said shaft havingon one end of it a circular dish-shaped saw Q, and cutters R, R,-the latter being of ordinary chisel-form and attached to the periphery of a hub c', which is attached to or adjoins the inner or concave side of the saw Q, as shown plainly in Fig. 2. The shaft P, is placed on the framing A, in such relation with the clamps C, D that the planes o-f rotation of the saw Q, and cutters R, R, will have an oblique position with the plane of rotation of the clamps.
The operation is as follows Power is applied to the shaft M, in any proper manner and motion is communicated to the shaft P, by the belt O. The stu S, from which the barrel heads are cut is placed between the clamps C, D, the latter being, by means of cam F, forcedv firmly against the stuff which is in consequence firmly secured between the clamps. In adjusting the stuff between the clamps, the frame B, is drawn back from the saw and cutters to the full extent of its movement, and when'the stuff is properly clamped the frame B, by means of lever I, is shoved toward the saw and cutters and by this movement the edge of the stuff is shoved within the plane o-f rotation of the saw Q, and cutters R, R, and the wheel E, is also thrown into gear with the pinion it, of the shaft J, and the clamps C, D, and stuff S, will consequently be rotated, the latter being cut in circular form and with a beveled edge formed of two bezelsvj 71:, the bezel y', being formed by the saw Q, and the bezel 7c, by the knives o-r cutters R, see Fig. 2. When the stu is thus cut and the head thereby formed, the operator by means of lever I, draws back the frame B, and the bar H, underneath said frame throws the lever G, against the cam F, which is operated by the backward movement of the frame B, so as to throw the clamp D, outward from the clamp C, and thereby liberate the finished head, the wheel E, being by the same movement thrown out of gear with the pinion h. The clamps C, D, then have freshv st-uE secured between them by actuating the cam F, manually, and the frame B, is again shoved toward the saw' and cutters and the operclamps C, D, cam F, lever G, and gearing ation repeat-ed.
