Description

JY 20, 1948- w. TRQGMAN BOX FASTENING MEANS Filed Oct. 14, 1944 Patented July Z0, `1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Y 2,445,412V y 1 I BOX FASTENING S William Trogman, Chicago, lll. Application October 14, 1944, Serial No. 558,655 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-47) This invention relates to boxes, especially oi the type known as merchandising boxes, in which there are two box sections arranged in intertting latched relation with respect to each other and provided with a handle to facilitate carrying the box about.
The invention has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
One of the principal objects of the invention resides in the novel latching means for box sections.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the box embodying my invention showing the same in a partially open position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same showing the box sections in interfltting relation;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan detail view, partly in section of the same taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail view of adjacent wall sections of the box showing the relationship of the latch structure with respect thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my improved box comprises two interiitting box sections I0 and II, the box being indicated generally at I2. The Isection I0 has a wall portion I3, and in this wall portion I3 in a direction from the edge I4 thereof is formed a recess I5 from which preferably though not necessarily are two lateral recesses I6.
The section II has a wall portion I1 provided with a slot or slit I8 through which is hooked a handle bar I9 having lateral extensions 20 which engage beneath the wall I1 when a box is being carried about.
The reces-s I5 provi-des a tab i8 which preferably, though not necessarily, is insertable through the slit I8 whereby to provide a reinforcement for the adjacent portion of the wall I1 which receives the greatest strain due to a weight in the box when the box is being carried about by the handle.
, tion set forth,
Formed in the wall I1 are oppositely disposed slits or apertures 2I, and these slots or `apertures 2|, which may be referred to as slots, are in registration with the slots or lateral recesses I6, which likewise may be termed slots.
The box sections when arranged in interfltting relation are releasably latched together by means of oppositely disposed latches 22. Each of these latches 22 is substantially U-shaped in form, with the limb 23 thereof insertable through the adjacent registering slot-s I6 and 2I. The opposite limb portion 24 is provided with a iinger piece 25 which facilitates removal of the latch from a latched position, and this limb portion 24 is provided with a kink or rib 25 which bears against the adjacent portion of the Wall I3.
The latch is formed of spring material so as to frictionally embrace adjacent portions of the wall I3 and I1. To assist in this frictional contact between the latch and the adjacent walls I3 and I4, in forming the slot 2| a spring tab 21 results, and this tab, as Ishown in Fig. 4, bears against the adjacent limb 23 and thereby assists in frictionally retaining the latch in position.
In carrying my invention into effect, it is to be understood that the shape, size, number and location o-f the slots I6 and 2l are not in limiting character and should not be considered as such. This is also true with reference to the form of the limb portion 24 and the material from which it is formed, except that it is desirable that the latch be U-shaped and be oi resilient material. The latch may be formed of round or flat material and in such la manner so long as it frictionally embraces adjacent portions of the walls I3 and I1 for the purposes herein stated. By the same token the construction of the box sections I1 does not enter into my invention, as the construction of these box sections, and especially the manner in which they are hinged or otherwise attached together for movement from and into interiitting relation, may vary in form and design as well as structure without destroying the utility and usefulness of my invention.
While I have illustrated and described the preierred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, `do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construcbut desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I 3 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A box comprising two interfitting box sections with a wall of one of the sections providing a recessed area and a Wall of the other section a slotted portion providing a yieldable tab, means for latching the box sections in ntertting relation with respect to each other with the recessed area in said one of said sections in registration with the V Y section, said means comprising a resilient substantially U-shaped member removably mounted and frictionally engaging adjacent portions of.
the said walls, the tab provided by said slotted 15 portion frictionally bearing against said member.
