Description
July 6 1948. w. MARSH ET AL STENCIL PUNCH Filed 001:. 3, 1944 Patented Judy 6, 1948 l STENCE PUNCH Walton C. Marsh and Herbert W. Hempel, Belleville, 111., assignors to Marsh Stencil Machine Company, Belleville, 111., a corporation of Illi- 11015 Application October 3, 1944, Serial No. 557,016
3 Claims. (Cl. 164-424) 1 2 This invention relates to an improved stencil merals have been used throughout to designate device and an improved method for making the like parts and in which: same, and concerns itself more particularly with Fig. 1 is a plan view of an improved stencil stencil character punches. character punch produced by the improved meth- Stencil machines of the type disclosed in 5 0d taught by the invention; United States Patent No. 2,293,339, filed June 3, Fig; 2 i 1939, by Walton C. Marsh et al., are preparation of stencil blan are provided with a series 0 ii ing punches repre ished product at the same time the character punch is-castior formed.
By means'of this process, a character punch is produced in which the character segments and the backing plate are formed in one piece to accurate dimensions. Since the countersinksare formed by, and the character segments are cast with, shear when the punch is form'ed;the character punch comes from the forming process as a finished product and requires no further operation thereon.
In addition to the economies provided by=this method of producing a character punch, the article itself is improved in that its character segments are unitary with the backing plate with which they are carried. Further it hasbeen found in successfully practicing the invention thatpuriches may be'made of brass alloy, a1- thoughother metals which will'hold a g'oocl cutting edge and which are adaptable to the above enumerated forming processesmaybe used. An article made by this method is accurate in its dimensions, is producednas a finish'ed product, and is-notsubject to failure due to separation of its segments fromits backing plate.
"As many changes can be made in the above construction andmany apparently widely different'embodimentm of this invention could be madewithout departing from the scope thereof, it 'isrintended that all'matter contained in the above descriptionor'shown'in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
' What is claimed is:
1. As: an article" ofmanufacture, a unitary character: punch: comprising a character segunitary structure.
,2.-As an article of manufacture, an integral character punch having a character segment and-a backing: plate therefor, said character punch being characterized as a unitary casting,
said character segment having a cast shear and said backing platahaving one or more countersinks cast-therein.
3. As an article of manufacture, a stencil character punch having a character segment and a backing plate therefor, said character punch being characterized as a unitary casting-with the" character segment thereofi-having'a-cast shear.
