MEANS FOR MIXING AIR WITH PRODUCTS 0F COMBUSTION OF FURNACES Filed June 12, 1945 H v \p...
TORNEY Patented June 15, 1948 MEANS FOR MIXING AIR WITH PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION OF FURNACES Richard 0. Fair, Wheeling, W. Va., assignor to Wheeling Furnace Corporation, Martins Ferry, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application June 12, 1945, Serial No. 599,078
3 Claims.
This invention relates to furnaces, and more particularly to hot air heating furnaces.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a furnace construction having a design which will increase the life of the smoke pipe leading from the furnace combustion chamber to the chimney flue. Smoke pipes attached to furnaces now commonly used burn out and deteriorate rapidly because they are subjected to the high temperatures of the combustion chamber as well as from the products of combustion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a furnace construction which will materially reduce, if not entirely eliminate, the discharge of objectionable sooty smoke into the atmosphere from the chimney flue.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view in perspective of the casing of a furnace illustrating the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a hot air heating furnace equipped with the invention; and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the showing in Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, the reference numeral 2 designates the casing of a hot air heating furnace; 3 designates the fire pot; 4 indicates the combustion chamber, and 5 serves to identify the furnace dome.
Accommodated by an opening provided in the furnace casing 2 and rigidly fastened therein is a tube 6. This tube is designed to be encircled by one end of the smoke pipe (not shown) while the opposite end is received in an aperture of the chimney flue.
Provided in the combustion chamber 4 and permanently fixed therein by any appropriate means is a baflie 1. Said baflle is preferably semicircular in shape and tapers downwardly, its lower end 8 having a contour to conform with the curvature of the furnace bell 9.
Located at a spaced distance above the smoke tube 6 and likewise accommodated by an opening provided in the furnace casing 2 is a cool air tube I0. Said tube has suspended interiorly therein a pivoted and free swinging disc-shaped automatic draft control I2.
It will be observed that smoke and other products of combustion from the combustion chamber 4 cannot reach the smoke pipe tube 6 without passing over the top of the baflle I, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. As they pass over said bafile and travel downwardly, confined within the space between the baffle and the furnace casing 2, the products of combustion are mixed with cool air at room temperature entering into the furnace through the fresh air tube ID, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. Thus, the temperature of the products of combustion is materially reduced prior to entering the smoke pipe tube 6 for discharge from the furnace. As a consequence, the smoke pipe is given longer life because of the decreased temperature to which it is subjected and, additionally, the products of combustion discharged into the atmosphere from the chimney flue are rendered less objectionable because of the inclusion of the cooler fresh air.
What is claimed is:
1. A furnace of the character described including, a casing having a top and side wall and enclosing a combustion chamber, said side wall intermediate its upper and lower ends being formed with an outlet opening for the products of combustion and an inlet opening spaced'thereabove for the admission of air, a baflle carried by the side wall of the casing interiorly of the casing and disposed across said openings in spaced relation thereto and to said side wall of the casing so as to define a passage having an open top, a conduit carried by the casing and communicating through said outlet opening with the passage defined by the side Wall of the casing and baflle for the exhaust of products of combustion flowing from the combustion chamber and through said open top passage, and a second conduit carried by the casing and communicating with said inlet opening for conducting air into the passage defined by the baffle and side wall of the casing so as to cool the products of combustion flowing through the open top passage and thereby the baffle and the first-named conduit.
2. A furnace of the character described, in accordance with claim 1, wherein there is means associated with the second named conduit for regulating the admission of air to the space between the bafile and casing.
3. A furnace of the character described, in accordance with claim 1 wherein the baflle is sub- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
