Description

June 8, 1948. D. R. SAUCIER 2 ADDITIONAL FUEL SUPPLY FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Jan. 5, 1945 I n um tor Ea 1/542. 5a a c z e z;
wW-w Ki Patented June 8, 1948 ADDITIONAL FUEL SUPPLY-FOR INTERNAL- COMBUSTION ENGINES David R. Saucier, Bossier City, La.- Application January 5, 1945, Serial No. 571,410 (Cl. 123-121) I 3 Claims. 1 This invention relates to vso-called fuel-saving devices such as auxiliary feeding and supplying attachments of types applicable to conventional internal combustion engines, for example, the forms used on present day automobiles and the like.
More particularly, the invention has to do with ways and means of utilizing the suction of the engine in the intake manifold to pick up and deliver added gasoline vapors and air from the stock filler pipe on the gasoline storage tank, this constituting a source of highly combustible fuel which is properly piped and delivered into the intake manifold.
In addition to the broad idea of providing a delivery conduit between the tank filler pipe and intake manifold, I have evolved and produced a simple and expedient accelerator-controlled regulator, this admitting the extra or additional fuel depending on the speed of the motor and the intensity of the suction developed as the motor speed picks up.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure l is an elevatlonal view showing the intake manifold, carburetor, fragmentary portion of the gasoline storage tank, the filler neck and the invention, the fuel saver, between the filler neck and intake manifold.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the control valve device.
Figure ,3 is a fragmentary view with the valve removed. to expose the progressively uncovered extra fuel inlet ports.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals, it will be seen that the gasoline storage tank It is provided with the customary filler neck B, this having a suitably vented cap C. The carburetor is denoted at D and the intake manifold at E. The crank arm for controlling the throttle valve is indicated at F and the accelerator push-pull rod is denoted at (3. These are all old and conventional parts, with which the invention is associated directly and indirectly.
I first call attention to the valve-controlled automatic regulator unit 4. This comprises a cylinder 5 having a suitable cap 6 at one end in which a reciprocating valve rod l is mounted. The outer end of the rod is provided with an dill upturned crank 8 which is connected with a link 9, the latter to the push-pull accelerator rod G. The inner end of this rod, that is, the end located in the cylindenis provided with a valve head ll adjustably mounted in position and provided with packing cups it in movable sweeping contact with the bore of the cylinder. A lateral nipple I3 is provided intermediate the ends of the cyllnder and this provides the desired connection for the feed line or pipe ii, the latter being connected in any suitable manner, as at It, to the intake manifold E. A diaphragm is located between the nipple and cylinder, which diaphragm is provided with a plurality of selectively usable and uncoverable additional fuel supply ports it (see Fig. 3).
I now call attention to an L-shaped elbow or fitting ll, this having a screw-threaded coupling which is tapped into the adjacent screw-threaded end of the cylinder s. The main branch is provided with a tool nut IS. The lateral outer branch i9 is suitably constructed to facilitate connection thereto of one end of the additional fuel pick-up and delivery line or pipe at. This, as shown in Figure 1, has its intake and corn nected in any suitable manner, as at it, with the capped filler neck B.
it is obvious that when the engine is operating, the suction draws the accumulated gas fumes and vapors and admixed air from the chamber in the tiller pipe, where considerable gases accumulate. The thus accumulated gases are drawn through the pipe and elbow ll into the cylinder l5, the same passing through the pipe Ml by way of the valved nipple construction it. The operation is automatic and the amount of fuel taken in at this point depends on the speed of the engine. "t mers the loot accelerator pedal (not shown) is pushed down, it operates the rod G and the rod G controls the sliding movement of the valve it by way of the link ti and associated valve rod l. The faster the speed of the motor, and the lower the loot ndal, the more the valve M is open. In other words, at certain speeds, all four ports it are uncovered by the valve. When, however, the smed is reduced, only one or two ports are open. Consequently, the amount of additional fuel drawn into the intake maniiold depends on the accelerator pedal action.
In practice, a suitable bracket 22 is provided to suspend the cylinder 5, said bracket having an appropriate attaching arm lit mounted on the manifold structure.
It is believed that this invention fulfills the rein turn being'connected, as at l0,
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the'construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed. Y
Minor changes in shape, size. materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. An automotive accessory in the form of an additional fuel supply for the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine comprising a manifold attachment embodying a cylinder, said cylinder being provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extending multiple ported neck, said neck being adapted to accommodate a discharge pipe which pipe in turn is adapted to be connected at one end with the neck, and at its opposite end with the intake manifold, an elbow detachably threaded intothe intake and of said cylinder, said eibowbeing adapted to accommodate a fuel supply pipe which pipe is adapted for connection at one end withthe elbow and at its opposite endwith the filler cap of a conventional gasoline storage tank, a cutofi and regulating valve slidably mounted in 'said cylinder and coacting with the ports in said neck, an operating rod connected with said valve, and means for connecting the outer end of the rod with a throttle valve actuating rod in order that the throttle valve and sliding valve may be simultaneously controlled.
2. The structure specified in claim 1. the outer end of said valve rod having a lateral bend form- 1.0
ing a crank, and a. llnkconnected with said crank, said link being adapted for connection with the push-pull rod which is used for actuatin: said throttle valve.
8. The structure specified in claim 1, in conjunction with a discharge pipe connected with said neck and adapted for connection with an adjacent portion of the intake manifold, and a pickup and supply :pipe connected at one end with the elbow and adapted for connection at its pposite-end with the filler neck of the stated i'uel storage tank.
