Description

(No Model.)
D. D. & J. DOUDS. INDICATOR FOR STEAM BOILERS.
v Patented July 12,1881;
IJVV'ENTIORJI v "WITNESS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID D. DOUDS AND JAMES DOUDS, OF BULLION, PENNSYLVANIA.
INDICATOR FOR STEAM-BOILERS;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,204, dated July 12, 1881. Application filed May 25, 1881 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID D. Bonus and JAMES DoUDs, of Bullion, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Low-Water Indicators for Steam- Boilers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of our improved lowwater indicator. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view on the line 00 at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. i is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to automatic lowwater indicators for steam-boilers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim;
In thedrawings hereto annexed, A represents the end of the boiler, and B O D, respectively, the upper, middle, and lower gage-pipes.
Upon the upper pipe, B, is mounted a vertical steam-valve, E, having a horizontally-projecting tube or pipe, F, terminating in a steamwhistle, G. The pipe F is provided with an upright, H, to the upper end of which'is piv oted a lever, I, provided with a teat or stud, J, fitted in a recess, K, in the head of the steamvalve, by means of a weight, L, adjustable upon the arm M of the lever having the stud J. Upon the opposite side of its fulcrum the lever I is provided with a vertical perforation, N. i
The middle gage-pipe, O, is provided with an upward-extending tube, 0, closed at its upper end and provided with a hook, P, upon which is adjusted a rod, Q, threaded at its lower end, which passes through the perforation N in lever I, below which it is provided with a nut, R.
The operation of my invention is as follows: In all boilers the water should at least be above the middle gage, and while it is known to be at this height the nut R is screwed up until it just touches the lower side of lever I. If the water falls below the middle gage the water in the vertical tube 0 is replaced by steam, thus expanding orlengthening the tube,
by the rod Q of which the arm M of lever I is forced in a downward direction, thus opening the valve E and admitting steam through tube F to the whistle, which is sounded, thus indicating to the attendants that the water needs to be replenished.
If it is desired to maintain any required pressure of steam, the weight L may be so adjusted upon the lever I that when the press ure falls below the given minimum the valve shall be forced open, thus causing the whistle to be sounded.
This invention is simple, easily applied, and will at all times automatically indicate the presence of low water or low steam.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the gage pipes 13 O, steam-valve E, having tube F and whistle Gr, lever 1, having stud J and adjustable weight L, and the tube 0, having hook P and threaded rod Q, provided with nut R, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID D. DOUDS. JAMES DOUDS. Witnesses:
J. G. KENADY, A. BUMGARDNER.
