Description
(No Model.)
I. GAULK.
GAR COUPLING.
No.. 244,182. Patented July 12,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC OAULK, OF BIRMINGHAM, INDIANA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,182, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed May 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo OAULK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a car-coupling embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the drawhead above the couplingarm.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the box of an ordinary freight-car; B, the draw-head, which is open on its under side back of the jaw O; and D, a pivoted arm, having an arrow-head, E, pro- 1 vided near its point with a vertical slot, F, to
adapt for coupling with the ordinary pin now in use when necessary.
The pivoted coupling-arm D is secured to the rear end of the draw-head B by a rod, G,- and the slotted hearing H, in the sides of the draw-head, have springs Hfwhich permit the coupling-arm to have a yielding motion in a horizontal direction. 7
To the sills of the car-body a rock-shaft, I, having handles orlevers J at each end, extending toward the end of the car, is supported in bearin gs, and is provided at its middle, and in such a manner as to operate between the sides of the open-bottom draw-head, with a double crank or loop, K, for hearing against the under face of the pivoted coupling-arm to cause it to be released from a similar arm on an adjacent car when the two are slacked to uncouple them.
The operation of the invention is obvious. The brakeman need not go between the cars to uncouple them. He may descend the ladder, in the case of a box-car, and uncouple the car by placing his foot on the lever, or in the case of a platform-car he may lie down and uncouple the cars with his hand without leaving the car in either case. Of course the cars may be uncoupled from the ground.
The device is simple, safe, and inexpensive.
The inclined guide-plate K is secured to the lower side of the open draw-head, and insures the introduction and connection of the arrowheaded links. The point of the link strikes the incline and is guided up into place with its fellow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupler, the draw-head B, having the guide-plate K and rock-shaft I, in combination with the draw-bar D, rod G, and spring H, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC OAULK.
