Description
May 4, 1948. D. s. J. KEEN DRAUGHT EXCLUDER FOR DOORS Filed April 4, 1945 Patented May 4, 1948 UNITED? PATENT OFFICE mmeen'r nxcwnnn-ron noons llaniekseymduraioh n Keen,--Sedgeberrow, gland Application April ,4, 1945-,-Serial No.-586;499 In'Great Bfitain April '1, 1944 This inventionrelates to draught exchiders for doors, and it has forobject'an improved form of draught excluder which is not fixed on the door itself but is ifittedonthe fioor'over which the door A further object is a draught excluderwhich i also preventswater creeping or" blowingunder the door. A further object isa-noveiform showingthe door closed withzthe draughtex eluding strip; raised.
Figure 4 is a sectionon linay-ey of Figure 3, and
Figure is a perspective view of one end of the base strip;
According to a convenientembodiment-ofthis invention, the draught exclnder eomprises a base plate I which is fixed on the floor at the bottom of the door opening, conveniently by. means of screws which pass through holes 2, and this base plate has two side cheeks 3 which lie against the sides of the door frame. A draught excluding strip or blade 4 is pivotally mounted in these cheeks, and when the door is closed, is arranged to lie in the recess 5 formed in the base strip l. The plate conveniently comprises a strip of metal which is folded around and fixed to the pivot spindle 6, the ends of which project from the blade. The inner edge of the blade or strip 4 is tubular and is concentric with the pivot axis and bears on a pad of resilient material I fixed in the bottom of the groove 5 so that a sealed joint is provided along the inner edge of the strip or blade 4. The front end 8 of the base plate is recessed on the underside and a pad 9 of sponge rubber or other sealing material is placed in the recess to form a water-proof joint between the base plate I and the floor.
The side cheeks 3 have guide tongues In thereon (or these tongues may be pierced and pressed back from the cheeks) to form a slotted slideway and one end of a link formed of the parts II and Ha is fixed to a slide I! mounted on the slide-way; the other end of the link is pivoted to a projection H! on the plate or strip 4. The link Hl la is extensible under spring pressure and for this purpose the part Ha passes through a perforation in the lug l4 on the part II and a spiral spring I3 is located between this lug and a head a on the part Ha. An arm is is de- 3 Claims. (01.. -6-7 tachablyrfixed to the link. I l and has an inwardly projecting abutment member thereon which is conveniently-in: the form of a cylindrical lug l6 havingwa coating of resilient material'on its sursface. The; draught excluding. strip or bladell is detachab-lyand-pivotally mounted in the cheeks:- 3 :andizforlthispurpose a'recessed channel I! is.
formed in. one side cheek-3 which enables one end ofitheispindleifi tobe forced down the channel lax-and sprung into-the perforation atthe bottom of the channel;ithe other. end of the spindle engaginga perforation in the other cheek. A projec tion:.-i8 is provided on each end of the blade l and thes'link Ila-Ha, slide IL -and arml5 can-be fitted onueither cheek. The arm i5 is also de tachableiso thatit can be eversed. Thedraught exclud'erfcan therefore be used-for right or left hand swinging doors. The arm 15- has a slot therein. so :that. it can. be adjusted for various 8% thickness of doors,..the bolt fixing the armxto theulink enabling the link;- tobeafixedatany angle.
When the. doorcis open the bladeior strip 4 lies" in the recess 5 and the base plate passing across the door opening only provides a slight protuberance and is in a position which will normally be stepped over when walking through a door opening. When the door is closed, the bottom edge rides over the base plate and the outer face of the door strikes the abutment it, which, through the medium of a link I l--I la pivots the strip or blade 4 upwardly to bear against the inside face of the door. By adjusting the arm 15, the tension applied to the spring 13 can be arranged so that when the door is closed the link H-l la is extended to place the spring l3 in tension and thereby spring pressing the plate or strip 4 against the inside face of the door. When the door is closed, the side cheeks 3 and the link I l-l la lie between the side edges of the door and the door frame or jamb. When the door is opened, it pivots the plate or strip 4 inwardly into the groove 5.
When the draught excluder is placed on an outside door, the pad 9 gives a waterproof joint and prevents rain being blown thereunder. With this construction, the draught excluder is not fixed to the door and therefore does not disfigure the same.
Iclairn:
1. A draught excluding device for doors, comprising a base plate for fixing on the floor at the bottom of the door opening, a draught excluding sealing strip pivotally mounted on the base plate at a position behind the inner or trailing face or the door when in a closed position and adapted to lie on the base plate when the door is opened, and to be raised against the inner or trailing face of the door when closed, means actuated by the pressure of the outer or leading face of the door thereon and connected to said strip to raise same when the door is being closed, comprising a spring expansible link pivotally connected at one end to the strip and at the other end carrying an abutment against which the outer or leading face of the door bears to move bodily forward the link and abutment with the final closing movement of the door whereby the blade is raised, and when the door is opened it presses on the sealing strip to pivot the same down on the base plate and to return the expansible link and abutment into position to again raise the: sealing strip when the door is closed.
2. A draught excluding device for doors, com- 4 the floor at the bottom of the door opening and having side cheeks arranged adjacent the sides of the door frame and having slideways thereon, a draught excluding sealing strip pivotally and detachably mounted in the side cheeks and adapted to lie on the base plate when the door is opened and to be raised against the inner trailing face ofthe door when the door is closed by means actuated by the pressure of the outer or leading face ofthe door thereon to raise the strip or blade when the door is closed, comprising a spring expansible link pivoted at its one end to the said strip at a distance from the axis about which said strip pivots and connected at the other end to a slide detachably mounted on a side cheek and capable of being slidably mounted on either of said cheeks and an inwardly prising a base plate for fixing above the surface of the floor at the bottom of the door opening, a draught excluding sealing strip pivotally mounted in lugs on each side of the base plate, a groove in the base plate in which the sealing blade lies when the door is opened and from which it is raised against the inner or trailing face of the door when closed, and means actuated by the pressure of the outer or leading face of the door thereon to raise the said strip when the door is being closed, comprising a spring expansible link connected at one end to the said strip and at the other end carrying an abutment member against which the outer or leading face of the door presses to raise the strip when the door is closed moving bodily forward the link and abutment with the door whereby the strip is raised and is yieldingly pressed against the door, and when the door is opened'it presses on the sealing strip to pivot the same down on the base'plate and to return the expansible link into position to again raise the sealing strip when the door is closed.
3. A draught excluding device for doors comprising a base plate for fixing above the surface of directed projection on a member detachably fixed in relation to said slide for bearing against the outer or leading face of the door when being closed to move bodily forward the link and abutment with the door whereby the strip is raised, and when the door is opened it presses on the sealing strip to pivot the same down on the base plate and to return the expansible link into position to again raise the sealing strip when the door is closed.
