. Applicationrfiled May12, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern: r Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS A.-GULLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Am- I Louisiana,have invented certainnew and'useful Improvements in Friction Reversing-Gearing for Presses, of which the following is a specification. 1 V i I This invention relates specially to cotton, hay, and moss presses, but may be used for other machines; and the nature of the same consists in a driving pulley or gear shaft having one of its ends applied laterally movable in a fixed bearing-box of a press-frame and its other end applied loosely in an oscillating gear-frame carrying two gear-wheels and two friction-pulleys, said gear-frame and drivingpulley shaftbeing arranged to alternately bring its friction-pulleys in gear with another friction-pulley on a shaft, which applies the power to a shaft which works the gearing of a screw or other press, the action being such that the screw of the press will be run up or down or back and forward to do the work of pressin g cotton or other substances, and then to run the screw back for another operation with increased speed, and all while the driving-pulley shaft is revolving in the same direction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my invention and a portion of a press to which it is applied, showing the driving-shaft in an oblique position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the driving-shaft and its bearing, the shaft being shown parallel with the frame of the machine or press.
A represents a portion of a cotton or other press; B, the screw; 0, a large bevel-wheel on the screw; D, a smaller bevel-wheel on the power-applying shaft, and gearing into wheel 0. On shaft E a large friction -pulley, F, is applied.
G is the driving-pulley shaft, carrying a pulley, H, at one end.
I is a pivoted oscillating frame, hung on a pivot, 12, in a fixed hanger, a, of the press-frame A. This swinging frame is provided with two setsof bearing-boxes, c c, and in the boxes 0 of said frame I, and the box of bearing 0 of the frame A, the pulley-driving shaftG is fitted to *together and'withsaid shaft. g V

The pulley L is of greater diameter than the pulley J, while the gear-wheel M is of less diameter than the gear-wheel K. The two pulleys J and L can respectively be made to bear with a frictional and driving con tact upon the large friction-pulley F. The two gear-wheels K and M gear with one another and. cause the pulleys J and L to revolve in opposite directions, as indicated by the arrows 1 and 2 in the drawings.
A lever, N, is rigidly fastened to a bracket of the frame I, and by means of this lever the frame I can be oscillated so as to bring either of the pulleys J and L into frictional contact with the pulley'F, and thereby cause the pulley F to move or revolve in either the direction of the arrow 3 or the arrow 4, accordingly as it is desired to have the shaft E revolved. If the frame I is adjusted to throw the pulley J in contact with the pulley F,'the shaft E, in revolving, will cause the bevel-wheels O D to work the power-screw B,which carries the platen of the press, with an upward or pressing effect; but if the said frameis adjusted to throw the pulley L in contact with the pulley F while the pulley J is moved out of contact with said pulley F, the direction of the movement of the said shaft E and the pulley F will be reversed and the bevel-wheels O D will be caused to run down or back the screw. The diametrical proportions of the gear-wheels K and M and pulleys J and L will be determined in accordance with the relative speeds at which it is desired to have the screw move up and down, and as the design is to have the screw move upward with a slow speed while pressing and downward with a fast speed while not pressing, the pulley J will be made smaller in diameter than the pulley L, in order to get the desired slow speed upward, and the pulley L larger than the pulley J to insure the faster down speed.
The operation of the mechanism described is rendered exceedingly simple as compared with other reversing mechanism heretofore employed by having the pulley-shaft capable of vibrating in the box of bearing 0 and then having its opposite end hung in an oscillating frame, I, carrying the gear-wheels and frictionpulleys, such frame'bein g provided with a rigid lever or arm, and also arranged upon the frame of the press in compact relation to the pulley of the power-applying shaft. Nis so arranged above the fulcrum or pivot b of the frame I that the friction-pulleys J and L may be applied with great force, and, if desired, a weight may be hung upon this lever or arm for the purpose of maintaining the frictional contact between the pulleys.
My invention is applicable for reversing the movement of other machines than screw-presses, and therefore is not confined to such presses.
Prior to my invention reversing-gearing of various descriptions has been contrived; but
The lever or arm i in none of these has a pulley-driving shaft, G, which is fitted at one end in a fixed box, so as to allow its other end to swing back and forth, been employed; norhas such shaftbeen connected by its swinging end with a swinging frame carryin greversing-gears in the manner shown by me.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1 The combination of the vibrating drivingpulley shaft G, the oscillating frame I, the friction-pulleys and gear-wheels on said frame, and a friction-pulley on a power-applyin g shaft of a press or other machine, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The swinging frame I, provided with a lever or handle and with friction-pulleys and gear-wheels, and hung in a bracket of the press or other frame, in combination with the vibrating pulley-driving shaft and with the pulley power-applying shaft, substantially as de- 4 scribed.
