Application July 11, 1942, Serial No. 450,573 1 Claim. (01. 123-200) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in medicated inhalers and cigarette chargers, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combination device of this character comprising novel means for receiving and holding an absorbent medicament impregnated filler.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a medicated inhaler and cigarette charger of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eilicient and reliable in use, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a medicated inhaler and cigarette charger constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section through the device.
Fgure 4 is an elevational view, showing the device open.
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of the medicated filler holder.
Figure 6 is a view in front elevation of the filler holder.
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation, showing the method of inserting or removing the filler.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the sealing ring.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated casing l of suitable material, said casing including a substantially rounded end portion 2 having therein a centrally located opening 3. The casing i is open at its other end. Mounted in the casing I at an intermediate point is a pin 4, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
The casing l is for the reception of an elongated removable holder 5 of substantially segmental horizontal section. A disk 6 closes one end of the holder 5. Fixed on this end of the holder 5 is a cap I, the skirt 8 of which is spaced from said holder for receiving therebetween the open end portion of the casing I. A sealing washer or gasket 9 of suitable material is provided in the cap I for engagement by the open end of the casing l.
The holder 5 further includes, on its upper portion, a pair of arcuate lips or extensions [0. The lips Ill are spaced from each other for the passage of the pin 4 therebetween. One of the lips I0 is formed to provide a cam II on which the pin 4 is adapted to ride for seating the casing l tightly on the gasket 9 for securing said casing in closed position on the holder 5.
Rising from the upper end of the holder 5 is an integral, resilient angular 'arm l2 having a valve l3 of cork or other suitable material thereon. The valve I3 is yieldingly engaged in the rounded upper end portion 2 of the casing l by the resilient arm l2 for closing the opening 3.
The holder 5 is for the reception of a filler l4 of cotton or other suitable absorbent material. Extending centrally through the filler I4 is a stiffening wire l5. The filler I4 may be impregnated with any suitable medicament.
It is thought that the manner of using the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, to open the device, the holder 5 is rotated relative to the casing l in a manner to disengage the pin 4 from the cam II and align said pin with the slot l6 between the lips 10. The holder 5 may then be drawn outwardly in the casing l, the slot I6 receiving the pin 4. In this manner the valve I3 is moved away from the opening 3. The rounded end portion 2 of the casing l is then inserted in the nostril for permitting air to be drawn through the device past the medicament impregnated filler I 4. With the device in open position, as seen in Figure 4 of the drawing, an end portion of the filler I4 is exposed sufficiently to permit a cigarette to be rubbed thereon for impregnating said cigarette with the medicament. The construction and arrangement is such that the absorbent filler [4 may be conveniently replaced with a new one when necessary or recharged with the medicament. A physician may prescribe medical solutions for people who smoke and inhale according to their particular cases. Also, a cigarette may be charged with a faint trace of the medicament or with a strong charge, according to the desire of the individual smoker.
It is believed that the many advantages of a medicated inhaler and cigarette charger constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is: p
A medicated inhaler and cigarette charger comprising an elongated casing including a substantially rounded, closed end having an opening therein, the other end of said casing being open, a pin in the casing, a holder of substantially segmental horizontal section rotatably and slidably inserted in the casing through the open end thereof, a cap on one end of the holder for the reception of the open end of the casing, a sealing gasket in the cap engageable by the casing, an impregnated filler of absorbent material mounted in the holder, said holder being slidable out of the casing for exposing the impregnated filler for engagement with a cigarette for charging same, said holder further including arcuate lips for retaining the filler, said lips being spaced from each other for providing a slot for the reception of the pin, a cam on one of the lips engageable with the pin for closing and securing the casing upon rotation thereof in one direction relative to the holder, a resilient arm on the holder, and a valve on said arm engageable in the closed end portion of the casing for closing the opening therein.
