Description

Nov. 9, 1943. H. J. CLASPY 2,333,918
SAFETY TYPE LIGHTING FIXTURE Filed Nov. 26, 1941 Patented Nov. 9, 1943 SAFETY-TYPE LIGHTING FIXTURE Hugh J. Claspy, Monaca, Pa., assignor to The Phoenix Glass Company, Monaca, Pa., a corporation of West Virginia Application November 26, 1941, Serial No. 420,478
2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in light fixtures and it is among the objects thereof to provide a safety type of glass holder and socket cover for enclosing light globes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a glass holder and socket cover adapted to diffuse light wherein the top and bottom portions of the unit are of glass of different characteristics and wherein the fitting of the parts produce a semi-indirect or a semi-direct lighting effect.
It is a further object of the invention to providea light fixture of the above-designated character which shall largely eliminate the use of metal parts, and thereby produce a lighting unit in which no dark and light areas aresharply contrasted.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view partially in crosssection of a light unit embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 a front elevational view partially cut away to illustrate the interior and cross-section of the parts of the structure shown in Fig.1; and
Fig. 3 a front elevational view of the light unit suspended by a ceiling support.
In the drawing, the numeral I designates a rod having a threaded end 2 from which it is suspended from a canopy which may be of glass, and having a threaded end 2" to which is secured a light socket 3 of porcelain or metal and whichis provided with a washer l forming an abutment for a combined socket cover and fixture support designated by the numeral 5.
The inner surface of the socket cover or fixture support 5 is provided with longitudinal ribs 6 and the outer surface on the shank portion is provided with longitudinal ribs 1 to provide diffusion of light, the element 5 being made of crystal glass.
A plurality of lugs 8 having shoulders 9 are formed in angularly spaced relation around the outer surface of the member 5 to receive a cover 10 provided with outer ribs II and inner ribs I2 for diffusion of light. The bottom of the socket cover is of substantially elliptical shape terminating in fianges I3 which is adapted to be inserted in a cylindrical opening ll of the light fixture which is made of opal glass or the like and which is provided with a constricted neck portion that rests upon the shoulder 16 formed by the flange IS, the fixture being designated by the numeral I1 and when suspended in position has the appearance of Fig. 3, the shape of the fixture I! being optional.
As herein illustrated and described, a lighting unit is of the screwless or safety type and is constructed of all glass parts. The socket-enclosing portion 5 is of crystal glass frosted, and the bottom half being of an opaque glass; however, the parts may all be made from opal glasses in either white or ivory or any desirable color.
As appears from the drawing, the light is diffused through the socket cover and the globe holder, and sufficient light is emitted between the space of the members 5 and II between the lugs 8 to produce an indirect lighting efiect. The entire structure is made of glass and eliminates the contrast between metal and glass which is a great improvement over the metal type globe holders.
By ribbing both the inside and outside of the socket cover, the socket and fixture of wiring parts are not visible. The cover l0 eliminates admission of dust to the fixture I1 and produces no strain on the fixture as it primarily rests on the shoulders 9 of the socket cover.
Although one embodiment of the invention has modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
1. A screwless safety type glass holder and socket cover for .enclosing globes comprising a socket cover having vertical inner and horizontally disposed outer diffusing ribs and having angularly spaced lugs,- said socket cover having a fiared bottom of substantially elliptical shape for insertion through the opening of a glass fixture, a glass fixture having a circular neck portion seating on the flared bottom of said socket cover and a glass cover resting on said lugs and covering the neck portion of the fixture, said last mentioned cover having inner and outer ribs similar to the ribs of the socket cover.
2. A screwless safety type glass holder and socket cover for enclosing globes comprising a socket cover having inner and outer diffusion ribs and having an elliptically shaped fiange portion at the bottom thereof, a light fixture suspended from and supported by the elliptical fianges of said socket cover, said socket cover having angularly spaced lugs, a glass cover supported by saidlugs having a depending flange out of contact with the light fixture, the last named cover being spaced from the fixture and the socket cover to provide ventilation and light openings therein.
HUGH J. CLASPY.
