4 Claims. (Cl. 12S-25) This application is a division carved out of application Serial No. 280,267, filed June 21, 1939, now Patent No. 2,280,184, dated April 21, 1942,
lThe invention relates to improvements in fastening devices andmore practically to paper fastener bases including means to detachably secure the base to a file folder o r backing.
An'object of the present invention is to provide a paper fastener base of a type having bendable sheet receiving prongs with novelly formed means for slidably and frictionably engaging orA co-acting with novel means on a file folder ori backing to detachably secure a sheaf of sheets carried on said base to the backing; said means consisting of inter-engaging parts, disposed wholly below the plane of the sheets, arranged to keep the assembly to a minimum thickness.
\An object is to providea novel mountingfor a paper fastener base with resilient means to frictionally bind the base thereto to prevent inadvertent separation of the parts and .which is easily manipulated to facilitate separation when desired.
Another object is to provide a novellyv con? structed paper fastener base and iile mounting which are inexpensive to construct, simple to operate, and highly emcient in use.
Another object is to provide a ling device of the character described which does not materially increase the thickness of a le.
The foregoing and such other objects of the invention as will appear hereinafter as the description proceeds, will be more readily understood from the perusal of the following description, in which reference is had to the accom.
panying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fastener base showing it attached to a portion ofa file folder or backing.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
The base I I is of a type having an intermediate body portion with bendable prongs I2, prcvideoll Divided and thisfapplication April-29,*
ber I3 to facilitate readydattachment of the sheaf of paper to a folder or backing sheet A. K f
The present invention'fis/V- intended primarily to facilitate mounting orremovalof "a'sheafof` bound papers in the le withoutdamageto the bottom sheet of the stack'whichlno'rmally occurs in known typesof mountings due to physical contact with said sheet by the mountingV member during relative movement vof the parts. Such va mounting organization'must, however, ,be-'such that the stack of sheets may easily and quickly be'mounted or removed without detracting vfrom the need fora relatively rigid not easily separated fasteningmeans. v f
Referring specicallytothe construction illustrated, .the intermediate portion of the base j II has its longitudinal side margins offset down-t wardly from'the normal plane of said intermediey ate portion to dene opposed longitudinal flanges I4. The flanges I4, .in effect, denej'an elevated central portion I5 in the'base whichilies tightly, against the bottom face of the stack of 'papers when the latterY is positioned thereon, thereby`re-- taining said stack spacedl from said flanges. Thev base is consequently admirablyv adapted for use in association with a mounting member preferably of the type shown at I3 which is suitably secured in any practical manner to one face of the file folder or backing A. l
As shown, the mounting member may consist of a substantially elongated strip of stiff material, such as sheet metal, having one longitudinal edge turned upwardly and then inwardly to deiine an overhanging lip I6 co-extensive with one longitudinal edge thereto. The other longitudinal edge of said mounting member I3 has an upwardly extending resilient lip or latch Il, which may terminate short of each end of the member for a purpose to be better understood as the description proceeds.
To mount the base II on a mounting member, one of its longitudinal flanges I4 is inserted, while the base is tilted transversely as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, beneath the overhanging lip I6, and the base is shifted transversely While being swung downwardly parallel thereto. This movement of the base positions the said ange I4 entirely beneath the overhanging lip I6 and the other longitudinal base flange I4 is forcibly urged downwardly past the resilient lip I1 whereupon the base 4is detachably secured and retained in superposed relation on the mounting member. Inadvertent shifting or removal of the base is prevented primarily by the binding and frictional engagement of the resilient lip Il with one iiange I4 and also by means of at least one pair of co-acting detents I8 and recesses I9 provided, respectively, in the overhanging lip I6 and under lying flange I4.
It should be apparent at this time, that sheets carried on the base II are held spaced above the mounting member I3 and its effective parts, in a manner to prevent damage to any of theA sheets by such parts. If desired, the base member I I may be removed from the mounting mein'- ber I3 by shifting it longitudinally relatively thereto until the frictionally engaged flange I4 is clear of the resilient latch I'I. l
It should be apparent that a fasteningdevice is provided which may be economically manufaclongitudinal flanges in a plane below the remaining base portion, a mounting member, an elevated flange co-eXtensive with one longitudinal edge of said mounting member to receive one of the base flanges therebeneath when the base is disposed over said' mounting memberand aresillent li'p on the other longitudinal edge of'sai'd mounttured and which includes provisions for detachably securing a sheaf of papers toa backingsheet or file. The bound stack of papers may be removed readily from the file for use or for placing in any other iile Without disturbing the papers,V and the papers may be as easily replacedV in the le by properly locating'the col-acting formations on the associated parts Aand moving one relative to the'other;v
What is claimed is:
1. In a filing device, a base having spaced apart prongs tov receive a plurality of sheets of paper threaded thereon said base having its longitudinal 'margins offset between said prongs to de- 'rie .longitudinal flanges in a plane below the remaining base portion, a mounting member, an elevated flange on one longitudinal edge of said mounting member to receive: one of the `base flanges therebeneath when the` base is disposed in a laterally tilted position over said mounting member, andv means on the `other longitudinaledge of said' mounting member to engage over the otherlongitudinal base flange whenv the base is sWungd'oWnWardly into a horizontal plane to detachabl'y connect and retain said base in vsuperposed relation on saidmounting member.
2.' In a. filing device, a base having spaced apart prongs to receive a. plurality 0f sheets of paper threadedfthereon, said' base having its longitudinal. margins offsetbetween said prongs toJdeflne ing member to frictionally and bindingly engage the other longitudinal base flange to detachably tion on said mounting member.
v3. Ijn Va filing device, a base having spaced apart prongs' tor receive a plurality of sheets of paper threaded' thereony said base having its longitudinal margins oifset between said prongs to dei'lne longitudinal anges in a plane below the remaining base'porti'onya mounting member, an elevated ilange'on 'said mounting member to receive one oithef'base flanges therebeneath when the base is disposed over said mounting member, and a resilient lip .On Vsaid mounting membervto friction'allya-ndbindingl'y engage the other 'longitudinal base flange to detachably connectA and re` tain said base in superposed relation on said mounting member.
4. In a fli'ng'device,4 a baseV havlngspaced apart prongs to receive a plurality of sheets of paper threaded thereon, said lbase having its longitudinal margins offset between said prongs to define longitudinal flanges in a. plane below the'rema'ining base portion, a mounting member, an, el'evated 'angeonsaid mounting` member to receiveone of the base flanges therebeneath when the base is disposed over said mounting` member, and,
` means on said' mountingl member to. frictionally and bindingly engage the other longitudinalhase ange'todetachably connect and retain said base in superposed relation onsaidmounting member.y
I said elevated 'flan'ge 'and means -beingdi'sposed wholly below the 'plane of' the said, remaining base portion.
