SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,074, dated October 12, 11880.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM OOLLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Steamers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved steamer. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective of the feed-pipe and base of the steamer. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of steamers designed for cooking feed, and more especially to improvements upon my former patent, n umbered 222,016 and dated November 25, 187 9; and the invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the exact manner in which it is carried out.
In the drawings, A represents a bowl-shaped base provided with a suitable flange, a, to sup port the boiler, and a stationary grate-rest, a, with dumping and shaking grate a. The feet I) are bolted to the base in suitable bearings and are provided on their inner sides with suitable bearings for supporting the triangular plate I), which supports the ashpan b, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
B represents the vertical cylindrical boiler, and O a chamber arranged insideof the boiler over the furnace, made in the form of the frustum of a cone, not as flaring or as high as the fire-box in my former patent above referred to, and having a crown-shaped head, 0, to which is attached a flaring pipe, 0, extending up through the cone-shaped water-tank D, and to which said tank is attached, and also into which the straight feed-pipeE is placed, fitting tight therein at its lower end and held in position by the bearings d, saidfeed-pipebeing provided (No model.)
with a side opening and hinged curved pipe, as in my former patent before referred to. The cone-shaped water-tank D, in the present instance, extends a short distance above the boiler, and communicates therewith by pipes fg, controlled by faucets f g, pipef convey ing the steam from boiler to tank, and pipe 9 the water from tank to boiler. The pipe h, communicating with the boiler, is provided with a screw-nipple for the attachment of the hosepipe conveying the steam from the boiler to the receptacle containing the feed to be cooked.
The boiler is provided with upper and lower water-gages controlled by stop-cooks, and a pipe controlled by a safety-valve, '5, as in my former patent above referred to, and I have in the present instance provided the water-tank with avalve, j, for closing the opening for su'pplying the water thereto, instead of a screwcap, which is much easier to manage and renders it safer, permitting the steam to escape in case the valve is left on when in operation.
The tire-box 0, being larger in diameter, furnishes a much larger area of heating-surface, with less water to heat, while it is entirely covered with water, thus affording perfect protection from fire-heat. The pipe 6 being made smaller in diameter at its lower end, and the feed-pipe made straight and fitting tight at its lower end and held in place at the top by the bearings 61, an air-space is formed between said pipes E 0, thus giving protection to said pipes and water-tank, while sufficiently heating the water in said tank.
By extending the water-tank outside of the boiler more room is obtained in the boiler for generating steam; and by arranging the pipes and faucets f gf g outside of the boiler they are more easily accessible in case of repair and more easily attached, while the present construction of base has the advantage of a dumping and shaking grate and ash-pan light, movable, andless costly in construction.
It will be observed that the conical chamber 0 and pipe 0 form the heating-surface for the boiler and Water-tank, the water in said tank being also kept hot by the heat from the boiler surrounding it, and consequently all the heat in g-surface is protected by water, with an additional advantage of the protecting air-space between pipes E a, while the boiler can be supplied with .water without stopping the cooking of the feed or lessening the head of steam, and the steam-pressure equalized through the medium of the pipes and faucets f g f g.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, conical fire and smoke flues extending up through boiler and water-supply tank, or anything, broadly, shown and described in my former patent above referred to; but
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 1 In afeed-steamer, the bowl-shaped flanged base A a, having stationary grate-rest a, dumping and shaking grate a, feet b, with inside supporting-bearings, triangular plate I), and the removable ash-pan b,substantiallyin the manner herein shown and described.
2. In a feed-steamer, the combination, with the base A and boiler B, of the frustum-of-acone-shaped chamber 0, having a crown-shaped head, 0, to which is connected the fiaringpipe e, water-tank D, through which passes and is I connected the pipe and the straight feed-pipe E, provided with bearings d, fitting snugly a its lower end in said pipe 0, the several parts constructed and arranged relatively to each other substantiallyin the manuerherein shown and described.
3. In a feed-steamer, the combination, with the base A and boiler B, of the frustum-of-acone-shaped chamber 0, flaring pipe 0, straight feed-pipe E, and water-tank D, arranged inside of and extending above the boiler and communicating therewith by outside pipes f y, controlled by faucets f g, the several parts constructed and arranged relatively to each other substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
